‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Receives Lowest Ever Score for a Comic Book Film

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the virtual world, I can’t help but draw parallels between my escapades and the latest cinematic adventure, “Joker: Folie à Deux.” Just as I’ve ventured into the unknown, battled formidable foes, and sometimes stumbled upon unexpected pitfalls, so too did this film embark on a journey with high expectations, only to encounter a less-than-anticipated reception.

The follow-up to “Joker: Folie à Deux” has underperformed at the box office, scoring an unusually poor D on CinemaScore. This new rating makes it the lowest-rated comic book film ever, surpassing the previous record holder, 2015’s “Fantastic Four,” which received a “C-.” Interestingly, the 2019 predecessor of “Folie à Deux,” titled simply “Joker,” had managed a higher grade with a “B+.

In “Joker 2,” Joaquin Phoenix once again takes on the title character of the Joker, now with Lady Gaga joining the cast as Harleen “Lee” Quinzel, also known as Harley Quinn, a character equally unhinged. The sequel unfolds in a style reminiscent of a dark musical and romantic tale, exploring the intertwined psyches of the Joker and Harley. Alongside Phoenix and Gaga, the film features Brendan Gleeson, Harry Lawtey, Catherine Keener, among others.

Initially forecasted to earn around $40 million at the box office, the movie is falling short of its anticipated range between $50 to $60 million. Contrastingly, the original film broke records with a $96.2 million opening and eventually grossed over $1 billion worldwide. However, recent theater releases like Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, which received a D+ CinemaScore, have shown signs of struggle. Despite a sluggish start at the box office, Joker: Folie à Deux is still competing for Grammy Awards for Phoenix and Gaga’s performances. Its ultimate success remains uncertain.
