Jack Black Gave Kate Winslet A Cute Nickname While They Filmed The Holiday, And I Love That It’s Still Used Today

As a devoted fan of romantic comedies, I wholeheartedly agree that 2006’s The Holiday is a timeless classic. The film has a unique charm that not only entertains but also resonates with audiences on an emotional level. Kate Winslet and Jack Black, in their roles as Iris and Miles, created a dynamic that felt authentic and heartwarming, and it seems that their friendship extended beyond the confines of the set.

2006’s “The Holiday” remains one of the top-tier holiday romantic comedies to date. The film centers around two women portrayed by Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz, who exchange homes during the holiday season, ultimately discovering love in unexpected places. Jack Black plays Winslet’s love interest and his quirky humor, passion for films and music captivates the Englishwoman. On-screen, their chemistry was undeniable, and it seems this connection carried over into real life as well. Intriguingly, Winslet disclosed that Black bestowed her with a special nickname, one that is reportedly still in use on set even today.

Kate Winslet had a conversation with Josh Horowitz on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast regarding her latest film, Lee, where she portrays real-life war correspondent Lee Miller. During their talk, Horowitz brought up The Holiday and shared that Jack Black had recorded a message for Winslet. In this message, the School of Rock actor jokingly inquired about both Titanic 2 and The Holiday 2. Although he was jesting, he also expressed his admiration for her. This heartwarming video then led Winslet to share her nickname given on set.

On the set, I’ve earned a small yet distinctive nickname – they call me “K Dub”. It was Jack who first coined this name, saying playfully, ‘Hey, K Dub!’, and it has since become a part of our on-set lingo.

It goes without saying that The Holiday is such a fan-favorite Kate Winslet film for so many, and I’m glad that something stuck from the production of the movie. The funny dynamic between Winslet and Jack Black in the film definitely seems to ring true in real life. The Oscar winner was amused by the video and expressed how much she loves and misses he comedic co-star. The continued use of the nickname feels like a nod to their time together, and she went on to explain how it permeates her work today, including her time on Lee:

In reality, when on set, it’s commonly referred to as K Dub by many. Alternatively, on Lee’s suggestion, we might inquire about the Kates since there were actually two of us.

It appears the “Kate” being discussed might be Kate Solomon, known for co-producing the movie “Lee” with Winslet. I find it truly empowering that two strong women were instrumental in creating this film, given its focus on a significant tale of female journalists.

Interestingly enough, Kate Winslet’s collaboration on ‘Lee’ shares a hidden resemblance to her role in ‘The Holiday‘ as both projects feature her alongside comedians. In ‘Lee’, Winslet teams up with Andy Samberg, who portrays photojournalist David Scherman, marking a significant shift towards drama for the comedian. Similarly, Winslet surprised audiences by joining forces with another comedian, Jim Carrey, in the profoundly serious ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind‘. It’s fascinating to note how she consistently works alongside humorists and yet manages to draw out their finest performances every time.

Still, Jack Black remains a particularly memorable scene partner for the Avatar: The Way of Water alum. Their dynamic was just so fun and grounded, and they were just a fairytale movie couple. The Holiday 2 may not be in the cards, as Black jokes, but I still would love to see him and him and “K Dub” share the screen again. I’m crossing my fingers that such a reunion will happen at some point and that they can adorable gush over nicknames during a press tour.
