‘The Walking Dead’ Writer Breaks Down Carol’s Violent ‘Daryl Dixon’ Detour

As a gamer who’s survived countless zombie apocalypses in various video games, I can say that the latest episode of “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol” was a rollercoaster ride of suspense and intrigue. The Greenland detour was an unexpected twist, adding a new layer to the storyline, much like finding a secret bonus level in a game you thought you’d mastered.

As producer and scribe David Zabel gathered his team for brainstorming season two of “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol”, six key phrases quickly came to him: “We’ve got our hands full.

So far, only two out of six episodes in season two have been aired, and the main characters haven’t crossed paths yet. If you’re growing restless, remember that air travel is complicated during a zombie apocalypse. As Zabel and the writers worked on plot developments to move Carol (played by Melissa McBride) from Maine to France, it became obvious that her journey would require at least one significant stopover.

In the second episode this week, Carol embarks on a journey to locate Daryl (Norman Reedus). This journey takes her to Greenland, where she encounters some unexpected challenges. Upon arrival, Carol and her new pilot companion Ash (Manish Dayal) are swarmed by undead zombies that have overrun the once-peaceful fields.

According to Zabel, he was the one who initiated this idea. They decided against having Carol simply appear in France without much effort. Instead, they wanted a more challenging route, so the plane wouldn’t fly directly. They began discussing potential stopovers, settling on Greenland. They pondered over who might be there and if such a person would still exist. The conversation then shifted to the type of walkers in Greenland, specifically the marshy ones. Lastly, they contemplated the storyline that could unfold with someone in Greenland, making it intriguing.

In a different phrasing, Zabel’s response to the previous question presents us with a pair of dedicated ecologists, determined to rescue humanity in an unconventional manner. These Greenlanders make their entrance as saviors, rescuing Carol and Ash from imminent death at the hands of marsh walkers. However, this is set within the world of The Walking Dead, so these scientists harbor a hidden agenda: they aim to abduct Ash, breed with him, and gradually repopulate mankind. Neither Carol nor Ash are thrilled about this proposition, leading to the deaths of the two scientists – one killed by the other, the second one by Ash himself.

According to Zabel, our initial concept was about two scientists possibly surviving, isolated in their research station post-apocalypse. We crafted an engaging narrative around that scenario. I’m particularly fond of it. If circumstances allowed, we would have delved deeper into the Greenland setting, but we were limited to six episodes.

According to Zabel, organizing the episodes for the character Daryl Dixon had both advantages and disadvantages. On one hand, it facilitated a compact, engaging plotline; on the other, it resulted in some intriguing storylines being left unexplored.

He admits it was incredibly challenging. You often have to set aside things you really wanted to investigate. There’s no shortage of material for our story, but we’re simply running out of space.

As a gamer, I’m hyped! Even though there are just four episodes left in season two of “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol,” they’re already cooking up season three! Here’s the kicker: instead of staying put, they’ve moved production to Spain. That means our duo, Daryl and Carol, are on the road again – who knows, we might even head back to Greenland someday… or maybe somewhere else beyond France and Spain. Exciting times ahead!

According to Zabel, they contemplated other destinations as well, hinting at possible alternatives to Greenland that almost made it onto the itinerary for The Walking Dead this past week. He mentioned that there are a few other possibilities in existence, suggesting uncertainty.
