During Sunday’s opening segment, the host of Last Week Tonight remarked that the discussion encompassed two main topics: implementing mass deportations and the question of personal autonomy for women regarding their own bodies. He compared this to analyzing a ransom note, focusing on its neat handwriting instead of the life-threatening situation it presented, stating, ‘There are still some people who were raised right,'” or more casually, “Last Week Tonight’s host discussed two controversial topics during Sunday’s opening: mass deportations and women’s control over their own bodies. He likened this to admiring the nice handwriting on a ransom note while ignoring the serious situation it described, saying, ‘There are still some people who were taught proper manners.’
Interestingly, the debate involving J.D. Vance (Donald Trump’s running mate) and Tim Walz (Kamala Harris’ running mate) took place at CBS Broadcast Center in New York, where “Last Week Tonight” is also filmed. Intriguingly, this very studio was used as a post-debate discussion area, so it’s possible that the air you’re breathing now contained particles from Don Jr.’s breath and lungs. If anyone here wakes up tomorrow with a sore throat and feeling like they’ve let their father down, it could be due to this reason, humorously suggested John Oliver.
Oliver presented excerpts from different commentators, emphasizing that the candidates were “respectful” and “well-mannered,” and he pointed out, “This is exactly what the nation has been asking for more of.
Oliver responded: “Civility ranks as low as sixth on the list of what America desires more of, following items such as affordable healthcare, gun control, reduced housing costs, reproductive rights, and a chance to feature actress Nicola Coughlan in leading roles.
After our debate, Vance attended a series called the Courage Tour, led by Lance Wallnau – a well-known far-right Christian nationalist and CEO of the Dallas-based Lance Learning Group. This organization positions itself as a strategic teaching and consulting company. I, being aware of his background, found it concerning that he would associate with someone who has publicly accused another individual, like Harris, of using witchcraft and harboring an occult spirit within them.
Oliver humorously pointed out, “It’s not Kamala Harris who’s been endlessly advertising witchcraft; you’re mistaking Universal’s marketing team. He was referencing the upcoming movie musical Wicked. And this individual seems misplaced when commenting on the election. He should instead be stationed in a tent from 1856, selling children elixirs he claims can enable them to communicate with spirits.
Additionally, he voiced his disapproval towards Wallnau’s claim that divine intervention caused Vance to end up in Pittsburgh, as Hurricane Helene had initially interfered with Vance’s plans.
Wallnau stated in the video shown, “It’s worth mentioning that our vice presidential candidate, J.D. Vance, is coming. To be completely transparent with you, I view this as a clear act of God. The plan was initially for North Carolina, but Pittsburgh was not even on the radar. Suddenly, it seems like God changed the plans in an instant.
“If it’s true that some deity would cause a destructive storm merely for J.D. Vance to enjoy an afternoon in Pittsburgh, then I’d say that deity is quite the jerk.
During last week’s debate, Oliver shared a recording featuring the conversation between Vance and Walz about the outcomes of the 2020 presidential election.
Vance: “Don’t forget, [Trump] had advised the protesters to demonstrate peacefully on January 6th. Fast forward to January 20th, and it was Joe Biden who took office as president while Donald Trump vacated the White House.
Walz: “Did he lose the 2020 election?”
Vance: “Tim, I’m focused on the future.”
Walz: “That is a damning non-answer.”
Oliver labeled Vance’s comment as “one of the most run-of-the-mill evasive responses akin to a store-brand player trying to charm his way out.” He further noted: “The response was particularly striking given that the day following the debate, a judge unveiled special prosecutor Jack Smith’s 165-page brief in the election fraud case against Trump. This document yet again served as a reminder of the extraordinary measures Trump took to avoid relinquishing office.” In the brief, investigators stated they spoke with a White House employee who allegedly heard Trump telling his family members that winning or losing an election is irrelevant; you still have to “fight like hell.
“But it super matters if you lost. It’s kind of the main thing that matters,” Oliver said, adding: “If he loses next month, there is every reason to believe Trump will dispute the results again. And Vance has made it clear, he’s got no problem with that and that alone should be disqualifying. For all the talk this week about his civility at the debate, let’s not forget: Deep down, he’s the same colossal dipshit who spews right-wing hate with distressing ease and continues to defend the big lie that the last election was stolen.”
