When Ranbir Kapoor 'questioned' Deepika Padukone's choice of doing Cocktail, saying it was 'not the right film' for her

As a dedicated follower and admirer of Deepika Padukone’s career, I can’t help but appreciate her bold decisions that have shaped her journey in Bollywood. One such instance is her role in Cocktail, a film that initially raised eyebrows due to some reservations from her co-star, Ranbir Kapoor. However, Deepika’s instinct and courage to choose the unconventional route paid off, resulting in an iconic performance and a fan favorite movie.

In 2012, the movie titled Cocktail, featuring Deepika Padukone, Saif Ali Khan, and Diana Penty, was released. Although Homi Adajania’s direction is still adored by fans; there was a time when Ranbir Kapoor expressed doubts about Deepika Padukone choosing to star in this film, suggesting it wasn’t the best fit for her talents.

During an interview with NDTV in 2015 while promoting Imtiaz Ali’s Tamasha, Deepika Padukone was asked if Ranbir Kapoor had convinced her not to do the movie Cocktail. In response, the actress shared that before she went to London for filming, Ranbir Kapoor, also known as the Ramayana actor, believed it wasn’t the suitable film for her.

In response to her query, Ranbir clarified that Homi Adajania, his valued friend, directed a specific genre of movie. As for the script of Cocktail, he wasn’t privy to many details except knowing that Imtiaz Ali was its writer. The actor who starred in Wake Up Sid mentioned that at the time when Deepika was offered Cocktail, she had numerous attractive proposals, and she opted for it.

In simpler terms, “Ranbir confessed that she had noticed something unique in the film ‘Cocktail’ that he may not have, prompting him to ask, ‘Why are you making this movie when there are so many talented directors eager to work with you? Why not their films?’ He believes her decision was driven by her personal judgment, which was stronger than his. However, as a friend, he just inquired and raised questions.

To elaborate, when Deepika enquired if Ranbir’s perspective on the movie shifted following its viewing, he candidly acknowledged that he wasn’t particularly fond of the film, yet he appreciated the actress’s performance in it.

Under the guidance of Homi Adajania, Cocktail is a narrative that centers around three companions. Among them are Veronica (portrayed by Deepika) and Gautam (Saif Ali Khan), who are involved in a romantic relationship. They extend this friendship to include a newcomer, Meera (played by Diana). However, their days filled with joy take an unexpected twist when Gautam finds himself developing feelings for Meera.

In terms of her professional endeavors, Deepika will make her next appearance in Rohit Shetty’s film titled “Singham Again.” This highly anticipated production starring Ajay Devgn is set for a theatrical release on November 1, 2024.
