As a die-hard fan of Javed Akhtar’s illustrious career, I find myself both awestruck and amused by his journey through the tumultuous landscape of Bollywood. His unwavering commitment to maintaining ethical standards in his work during the 80s, when double-entendre and nonsensical songs were all the rage, is nothing short of inspiring. It’s a testament to his integrity that he refused to compromise, even when it meant turning down iconic films like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
Javed Akhtar, a highly respected screenwriter in Bollywood, has been well-known since the 1970s. Recently, he shared that he views the 1980s as a particularly challenging period for Hindi cinema because numerous songs with suggestive meanings were penned during this time. Consequently, he wrote just one song for Karan Johar’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, which also happened to be the movie’s title. However, due to his ethical beliefs, he shied away from composing nonsensical or double-entendre lyrics during this era. Regrettably, he now wishes he had contributed to that film as well.
Javed Sahab recently discussed his past career on Sapan Verma’s YouTube channel, Chill Sesh. This well-known screenwriter, who is widely recognized as one of Bollywood’s top lyricists, went into detail about an event that occurred. During the 1970s, he collaborated with Salim Khan, and together they wrote several successful films from that period, such as Sholay, Don, Zanjeer, Deewar, and others. However, in 1982, their partnership ended.
Javed Akhtar reminisced about the 1980s as a difficult period in Bollywood’s history from a writing perspective. He explained that during this time, nonsensical or lewd songs were popular and widely accepted. However, he adhered to his principles and chose not to participate in such songwriting. In his own words, “I believe the ’80s represented the darkest era for Hindi cinema. Either the songs had double entendres or lacked meaning entirely. I steered clear of movies whose lyrics I deemed nonsensical or vulgar.
After penning the Kuch Kuch Hota Hai song for Karan Johar’s movie, Karan Johar chose the movie’s name from it. However, he decided not to compose any further songs because he considered such films to be nonsensical and absurd.
He openly confessed, “That principle guided me to reject a highly successful movie titled Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. I had composed the initial song for it, but when Karan chose the title, I opted not to collaborate on a film with such a name. At the time, I questioned myself, ‘What does Kuch Kuch Hota Hai mean?’ Now, I feel remorseful about my decision, but then I stood firm.
Although there was some ambiguity, Javed Akhtar collaborated with Karan Johar on the 2003 film “Kal Ho Naa Ho.” The movie “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai,” featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji, was a huge success, both critically and commercially. In fact, “Kal Ho Naa Ho” also left a lasting impression on Bollywood’s cinematic history.
