Fallout Star Ella Purnell Shuts Down 'Scream Queen' Label

As a cinephile with a penchant for exploring the vast expanse of cinema, I find Ella Purnell‘s journey through the world of horror and suspense to be nothing short of captivating. Despite her preference for lighter fare, she has proven herself more than capable in the realm of the macabre and gruesome, leaving me eagerly anticipating her upcoming roles in Sweetpea and The Scurry.

Regardless of the fact that Ella Purnell has become famous for her roles in intense, gory, bloody, and sometimes terrifying films and series, she herself dislikes all those terms and has decided against pursuing a career as a “Scream Queen.” After earning her big break in Tim Burton’s darkly gothic movie Miss Perigrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, the English actress has continued to appear in productions like Yellowjackets, Fallout, and is set to play the main killer in the extremely violent film Sweetpea. However, despite the graphic nature of her acting career, Purnell insists to The Guardian that she’s a contented and well-balanced individual! She never had an affinity for the genres she found success in.

The actress expressed her reluctance towards horror films, a fact that might surprise her expanding fan base given the nature of her upcoming projects. Although Yellowjackets and Fallout aren’t classified as horror, her new series Sweetpea is gruesomely violent. To add to this, she is venturing into the horror genre with comedic elements in her next project, The Scurry – a comedy-horror about a swarm of killer squirrels causing havoc at an eco-cafe. However, despite her burgeoning career, Purnell remains puzzled as to how she ended up involved in such genre twists. She admitted: “I’m not sure how this all came to be.

It’s quite surprising, but I must admit that I’m not particularly fond of watching violent or supernatural content, I’m not deeply interested in science fiction, and I don’t play video games. So it’s a mystery to me how I find myself in these circumstances!

Despite her aversion to the genre, The Scurry and Sweetpea won’t be the first time Purnell has shifted towards terrifying storytelling. The actress appeared in Zack Snyder’s Netflix zombie project, Army of the Dead, playing Scott Ward’s (Dave Bautista) daughter, Kate. She was also set to star in the sequel. However, the project was recently scrapped following the under-performance of Snyder’s new sci-fi saga, Rebel Moon.

Ella Purnell Explains Her Latest Show, Sweetpea

“Sweetpea,” a fresh series produced by Sky and Starz, follows Ella Purnell’s character, Rhiannon, who is trapped in a fading romance with an indifferent partner, overlooked at work, and shunned by those in her social circle in London. However, when her simmering resentment erupts unexpectedly, Rhiannon unearths an unexpected fondness for exacting revenge on those who have wronged her, leveraging her insider understanding of crime to advance her career as a journalist – much like how Peter Parker consistently captures images of Spider-Man. Yet, as Rhiannon becomes increasingly enthralled by the allure of murder, Purnell grapples with concealing her deadly secret from her acquaintances.

For Ella Purnell, the twisted and violent nature of Rhiannon’s character in the series significantly differed from her portrayal of Lucy in Fallout, a role defined by the phrase “Okey-dokey!”. During an interview, Ella talked about her experience playing Rhiannon and admitted that while she grasped her character’s mindset, she could never fully empathize with her. Purnell elaborated:

Women frequently face expectations to be appealing, attractive, and flawlessly presented. It can be challenging to develop a sense of her moral intricacies, as I found myself empathizing with Rhiannon yet unable to personally identify. I had to stretch my mental abilities to grasp her actions.

Sweetpea premieres on Sky and Starz on October 14, 2024.
