As a dedicated fan of Dragon Ball Z since its initial airing, I was deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Doc Harris, the voice behind the English language narrator. His contributions to the anime world, particularly his work on the iconic series, will forever be cherished by fans like myself.
Sadly, Dr. Harris, the initial voice actor who narrated the Dragon Ball Z anime in English, has passed away at the age of 76.
On October 5, Harris sadly succumbed to his condition at Vancouver General Hospital following a routine operation, as reported by the Canadian broadcasting industry periodical, Broadcast Dialogue.
Born on August 3, 1948, as Gilbert Achinleck, Harris initially found his footing in Canadian radio broadcasts and eventually gained notoriety within the realm of anime.
Gil Harris started his career at CKOM in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan back in 1970, under this name. For the following three years, he transitioned among various radio stations located in Sudbury, Hamilton, and Toronto, Ontario, using the pseudonym Doc Holliday.
After that, he touched down at Vancouver’s CKLG station in 1973, known as Doc Harris the disc jockey. For the subsequent 25 years, Doc Harris enjoyed a prosperous radio career across various Vancouver stations such as CFMI-FM, CKKS (KISS FM), CKST and news station CKNW, as well as CFUN, CKNW and CISL.
However, in honor of Harris, a renowned voice actor who lent his voice to the English narration of Dragon Ball Z, the world of anime is expressing its tribute. Dragon Ball Z, a martial arts-centric series and franchise, produced iconic characters such as Goku, Piccolo, Bulma, and Krillin. This series was transformed into an acclaimed anime by Toei Animation.
The animated show “Dragon Ball Z” made its debut in 1989 and continued until 1996. Harris was also the voice behind other anime series like “Monster Rancher”, “Eat-Man ’98”, “Sister Blue”, and the “Aegis Defenders” video game.
In 2019, Harris lent his voice to the character of Grogar for a total of five episodes in the television show “My Little Pony: Magic of Friendship,” where Tara Strong and Ashleigh Ball were among the other talented voice actors.
