Mickey Mouse Cranking 90s in Fortnite? We Have Some Bad News for You

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that I was initially excited about the prospect of Disney characters gracing Fortnite’s battlefields. However, upon learning that they won’t be wielding weapons, a part of me can’t help but feel like Mickey Mouse has just been relegated to the role of Peacekeeper in Overwatch.

If you envisioned iconic characters like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, or Goofy participating in Fortnite, performing a 90-degree spin to win Victory Royale, you might find it disheartening to learn that Disney prefers these characters not to wield any kind of weapon when they eventually enter the battle royale scenario.

Previously, Fortnite had seen numerous collaborations with characters from Marvel and Star Wars even before Disney invested $1.5 billion in Epic Games. This year, however, discussions for broader collaborations extending beyond superheroes were initiated. Regrettably, it appears that Disney will have a significant influence over how Epic Games manages these cross-overs.

In an engaging conversation with The Verge, Epic Games’ Executive Vice President Saxs Persson shared that the partnership with Disney offers more than just gaming features. Yet, there are boundaries to the ways players can utilize Disney-themed accessories within these interactive settings.

Persson points out that not every style can perform all functions. For instance, a LEGO minifigure doesn’t carry weapons. Therefore, brands should have the freedom to uphold their brand standards as much as they deem suitable, considering the implications of their brand being linked to specific ratings.

If you haven’t kept up with the latest gaming news, it’s worth noting that Fortnite has expanded beyond its battle royale roots. Nowadays, it includes experiences like Lego Fortnite, a building simulation reminiscent of Minecraft, Fortnite Festival, a rhythm game similar to Rock Band developed by Harmonix Music Systems (an established developer), and Rocket Racing, an arcade-style racing game developed by Psyonix, the creators of Rocket League.

The interconnectedness among various cosmetic elements is meticulously designed and polished, allowing players to utilize a large number of skins across all game modes. Notably, games like Rocket League and Fall Guys contribute to this seamless integration, with numerous connections between them and Fortnite introducing quests and cosmetics for players to earn over the past year.

Although it might feel a bit disheartening that Disney skins won’t appear in the primary battle royale game modes, there are plenty of alternative modes where you can still utilize these characters. Add to that the exciting new Disney and Epic-exclusive experiences they seem to be developing!

In the interim, it’s likely that additional Disney-themed skins will appear in the Fortnite Item Shop after the launch of The Incredibles set. Characters such as Captain Hook, Cruella de Vil, and Maleficent are rumored to be joining the game, hinting at their formidable power that could potentially dominate an entire gaming session.
