As a seasoned gamer and film enthusiast with a penchant for animated masterpieces, I must say that this year’s European Film Awards nominees have truly piqued my interest. The diverse range of styles, from the dialog-free 3D marvel that is Gints Zilbalodis’ Flow to the hand-drawn charm of They Shot the Piano Player, promises an exhilarating cinematic journey.
On Wednesday, the European Film Academy revealed the five contenders vying for the title of Best Animated Feature at this year’s European Film Awards.
2024’s nominated animated films feature an array of compelling narratives. Among them are: “Flow” by Gints Zilbalodis, a wordless ecological fable that follows a cat and its animal companions fighting to survive a devastating flood; “Living Large,” a heartwarming coming-of-age story from Kristina Dufková about an overweight 12-year-old boy with exceptional culinary skills; “Savages,” Claude Barras’ drama set in Boreno, which tells the tale of deforestation and a lost baby orangutan; Isabel Herguera’s “Sultana’s Dream,” a film about a Spanish artist on a quest to discover a utopia for women where they can live in harmony; and “They Shot the Piano Player,” directed by Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal, which chronicles the life of Francisco Tenório Júnior, a prominent figure in the bustling Brazilian music scene of the 1960s and ’70s who mysteriously vanished in 1976.
For the very first time, the academy has expanded the top prize of Best European Film to include animation and documentary movies. As a result, all five nominees are now eligible to win this prestigious award.
The nominees represent a diverse mix of animation styles and origins. Flow is a 3D computer-generated animation, Savages and Living Large are claymations, Sultana’s Dream and They Shot the Piano Player are hand-drawn. Among them, Zilbalodis hails from Latvia, Dufková is Czech, and Barras is Swiss. Herguera, Trueba, and Mariscal are all natives of Spain.
This group is quite renowned, with some impressive accolades under their belt. “Flow” and “Sultana’s Dream” were major victors at this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival. “Savages” made its debut at Cannes this year, while “They Shot the Piano Player,” starring Jeff Goldblum’s voice talents, premiered in Toronto last year.
Previously, the European Film Awards often signaled upcoming accolades. Last year’s animated feature victor, “Robot Dreams” by Pablo Berger, unexpectedly received an Oscar nomination.
On November 5th, the entire list of nominees for the European Film Awards will be revealed. The prestigious European Film Awards ceremony of 2024 is scheduled for December 7th in Lucerne, Switzerland.
