Tim Burtons Dark Knight Gets Unexpected Sequel in New Novel Batman: Resurrection

As a film enthusiast with a soft spot for the dark and gritty world of Tim Burton’s Batman, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia when it comes to the news about the upcoming book, “Batman: Resurrection“. Having grown up watching Michael Keaton’s portrayal of the caped crusader and marveling at Jack Nicholson’s chilling Joker, I must say this is a welcome addition to my collection.

As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve frequently found myself caught in discussions about whether films like “Batman Forever” and “Batman & Robin” are part of Tim Burton’s Batman universe, often being dismissed by fans who prefer the darker, more gothic Keaton movies. Despite my personal opinion that “Batman Forever” wasn’t entirely terrible, a new book by John Jackson Miller titled “Batman: Resurrection” unfolds post-“Batman,” disregarding the subsequent films directed by Joel Schumacher.

It appears that Michael Keaton’s final portrayal of Batman on screen may be in the upcoming movie The Flash, so if you’re looking for more Batman content, books might be your best bet right now. The first part of a new duology titled Batman: Resurrection is set to release on October 15th. Unlike the Tim Burton film Batman Returns, this book serves as a sequel to the 1989 movie and does not reference or include The Penguin. Instead, it follows the storyline from Burton’s first Batman film and deals with the aftermath of the Joker’s death. According to the synopsis provided by Penguin Random House, Batman still has plenty of work ahead in keeping the streets clean, even though the Joker is no longer a threat.

“But even after death, the Clown Prince of Crime’s imprint can be seen in more than just the pavement. Remnants from The Joker’s gang are leading wannabes fascinated by his bizarre mystique on a campaign of arson that threatens the city—even as it serves greedy opportunists, including millionaire Max Shreck. And survivors of exposure to The Joker’s chemical weapon Smylex continue to crowd Gotham City’s main hospital.”

This Isn’t the First Time We’ve Been Back to Batman ‘89

For the first time, fans are diving back into the Batman universe as envisioned by Tim Burton through prose. However, this has been explored before, particularly in comic books. As a matter of fact, in 2021, Batman screenwriter Sam Hamm collaborated with artist Joe Quinones to reimagine this world in a six-issue miniseries, followed by another series set for release in 2023 called Batman ’89: Echoes. Unlike the Resurrection series, this comic takes place after the events of Batman Returns, allowing for greater flexibility in introducing new characters. For instance, the comic series introduced readers to Robin and Harley Quinn within the Burtonverse for the very first time.

The original comic series were highly praised by critics and are definitely worth exploring if you’re seeking more material based in Burton’s Gotham City. One of the sequels, titled “Echoes“, partially incorporates elements from an unrealized fifth collaboration between Burton and Schumacher, named “Batman Unchained“. Regrettably, if a movie version ever emerges from these comics or novels, Michael Keaton might not be involved because of his age. Even so, various actors have shown they can don the Batman costume, but it would still feel strange for a story to unfold in this specific universe with someone else portraying the character. However, it appears that the narrative will carry on across multiple platforms as long as fans continue to show enthusiasm.
