As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I must say that Aaron Pierre’s casting as Green Lantern John Stewart in DC Studios’ and HBO’s “Lanterns” has sent ripples of excitement through the gaming-cum-comic book universe! This man has been on a roll, with his leading role in Jeremy Saulnier’s Rebel Ridge debuting on Netflix, becoming the number one title worldwide for three weeks in a row. He’s had brushes with the comic book realm before, and now he’s diving headfirst into the Green Lantern Corps!
Aaron Pierre, lead actor from “Rebel Ridge” on Netflix, has landed the coveted role of Green Lantern John Stewart in the highly anticipated series “Lanterns,” produced by DC Studios and HBO.
The search for actors for this upcoming series is under a great deal of attention, being that it’s the initial significant TV project from DC Studios leaders James Gunn and Peter Safran. Moreover, the character of Stewart holds immense importance as he represents one of the earliest Black superheroes in DC Comics.
The rigorous auditioning phase ultimately involved Pierre and Stephan James, who are currently making waves in the film festival scene with the drama piece “The Piano Lesson” and who previously appeared in the 2016 biopic about Jesse Owens, titled “Race”. On Thursday and Friday, they both underwent screen tests, facing off against the pre-cast Kyle Chandler. While each actor had their supporters, the final call was made on Tuesday.
Without a doubt, Pierre sets the stage ablaze with his captivating performances. In recent months, he’s risen to the top of casting considerations everywhere. His stellar role in Jeremy Saulnier’s “Rebel Ridge,” premiered on Netflix on September 6th and held the number one spot globally on Netflix for an uninterrupted three weeks.
The actor has previously dabbled in the world of comic books. Previously, he worked alongside Mahershala Ali in Marvel Studio’s version of Blade, but due to changes in the long-delayed film, he will no longer be part of future developments. Additionally, he made an appearance in M. Night Shyamalan’s Old, which is based on a graphic novel.
In simpler terms, the series is known for its gritty, “True Detective”-like atmosphere and focuses on Hal Jordan, an esteemed member of the Green Lanterns, the interstellar police force. Despite his initial reluctance, he takes on the task of mentoring Stewart, a newer recruit. The pair of cosmic enforcers find themselves embroiled in a sinister mystery that unfolds on Earth when they’re called to investigate a murder in the Midwest.
Television veteran Chandler, recognized for his notable roles in “Friday Night Lights” and “Bloodline,” will portray the character Jordan.
James Hawes, a well-known television director who recently directed several episodes for the Gary Oldman spy series “Slow Horses,” has been selected to direct the first two episodes of the upcoming sci-fi police series.
The series titled “Lanterns” has received a direct-to-sequence order from HBO, and it boasts esteemed creators behind it. Chris Mundy (of “Ozark”), Damon Lindelof (“Watchmen”, “Lost”), and Eisner Award-winning comic book writer Tom King are serving as executive producers and writers, with Mundy taking on the role of showrunner for an anticipated eight-episode season. Additionally, Hawes is also joining the production team as an executive producer.
In 1971, Dennis O’Neil (the writer) and Neal Adams (the artist) debuted Stewart in Green Lantern issue #87, which was twelve years following the introduction of Hal Jordan and the expansive Green Lantern Corps universe.
More recently, Pierre has been spotted in various roles. He led the National Geographic series “Genius: MLK/X” as Malcolm X, starred in Garth Davis’ 2023 sci-fi drama “Foe” alongside Paul Mescal and Saoirse Ronan, featured in Clement Virgo’s “Brother”, and graced Barry Jenkins’ award-winning limited series “The Underground Railroad”. In the coming December, he will step into the character of Mufasa for Barry Jenkins’ computer-generated animated prequel to “The Lion King” produced by Disney.
