As a dedicated fan with over a decade of following the One Chicago universe, I must say that last night’s episode of Chicago Fire left me feeling a bit uneasy. The revelation about Damon being Severide’s half-brother was quite the twist, but it seems that the real drama lies ahead.
Spoilers ahead for Episode 3 of Chicago Fire Season 13, called “All Kinds of Crazy.”
From the gripping finale of Season 12 of “Chicago Fire,” streaming exclusively on Peacock, came an unexpected twist: It turned out that the enigmatic character Damon was none other than Severide’s long-lost brother! However, in the upcoming episode “All Kinds of Crazy” (slated for 2024), it seems that Damon is indeed up to no good. He deceitfully misled Chief Pascal by falsely accusing Stella Kidd of being an unfit officer, a move that could potentially lead to her removal from Squad 51.
It turns out, the tense situation between Damon and Severide from the previous episode wasn’t as dire as we thought! Thankfully, Mouch ensured Pascal had all the necessary details, which helped him maintain his stance despite Kidd’s response to him and Truck’s high turnover rate. In the end, Damon was dropped from 51 and had to depart, but not without shooting a worrying remark at Severide first. Before storming off, Damon said something troubling to Severide.
I hope our relationship can be built on trust. My purpose for coming to 51 was to learn from you and grow, but it seems that you left me behind as soon as an opportunity arose. Moreover, when I needed your assistance during a critical moment, you were engrossed in solving an arson case instead. It appears that you believe Benny is merely part of your past, yet the truth is, you are Benny in many ways.
In essence, it appears that all the issues Damon complained about were self-inflicted, as Severide wasn’t required to assist him or cover for him towards Kidd and Pascal. From the start, Damon’s actions were dishonest, and they are both grown adults. If anything, his departure from Firehouse 51 was a result of numerous questionable decisions, and returning to the reserve pool doesn’t seem so harsh when considering the deception he attempted by lying about Kidd to the new chief.
Even though Damon may have been mistaken in his statement, it doesn’t rule out the fact that Severide could still feel pain from a parting shot. In my conversation with showrunner Andrea Newman prior to Season 13, she hinted at challenges for Stellaride and family planning due to the repercussions of Benny Severide’s son. When I pointed out some Easter eggs related to Benny Severide during my rewatch of the Season 12 finale, Newman responded positively, acknowledging it was neat that I noticed them.
Considering everything, I’m concerned that Severide might struggle with the idea that he resembles his father, which could lead to a downward spiral. Even though Stella hasn’t indicated she’s ready for a family, it would be disheartening if Severide were to question his worthiness of being a father due to being Benny’s son. His readiness to take on the role of a parent was a significant development in him. It would be such a pity if he started doubting himself again, all because of what Damon said in anger.
Unfortunately, the sneak peek for the upcoming episode doesn’t provide clarity regarding this matter, but it hints that fans may want to keep hoping for Violet. Here’s a glimpse:
On Wednesdays at 9 p.m. Eastern Time, new installments of Chicago Fire broadcast on NBC. This time slot is sandwiched between Chicago Med at 8 p.m. ET and Chicago P.D. at 10 p.m. ET, forming a trio of shows collectively known as One Chicago.
