‘The Serpent Queen’ Canceled After 2 Seasons at Starz

As a seasoned gamer of historical dramas, I must admit my disappointment at the news that “The Serpent Queen” won’t be gracing our screens with another season. Having closely followed Catherine de Medici’s tale since the first episode, I found myself captivated by Samantha Morton’s portrayal and intrigued by the power struggles and political machinations of 16th-century France.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the TV series known as “The Serpent Queen” will not be renewed for a third season on Starz.

The news has emerged roughly a month and a half following the season two finale that aired in August. To be precise, we’re discussing “The Serpent Queen,” a series inspired by Leonie Frieda’s book titled “Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France” which sheds light on the life story of Catherine de’ Medici, who reigned as the 16th century queen of France.

In the second season of my gaming world, I find myself wrestling with power as I navigate through internal strife, rivalries, and deceit in an attempt to bring unity to France. This epic series, masterminded by Justin Haythe (known for his work on ‘The Lone Ranger’), features Samantha Morton portraying my character, Catherine, alongside Amrita Acharia, Enzo Cilenti, Ruby Bentall, Nicholas Burns, Beth Goddard, Raza Jaffrey and Danny Kirrane.

The Series “Serpent Queen” was created internally by Lionsgate Television and 3 Arts Entertainment. Francis Lawrence, known for his work on The Hunger Games, and Erwin Stoff, known for The Matrix, served as executive producers. This series was commissioned directly in early 2021 when Starz CEO Jeffrey Hirsch was trying to fill the cable network with programming centered around “premium female” content, focusing on stories about women from history that would appeal to women aged between 24 and 54. (The term “premium female” has since been replaced with “female-forward.”)

Currently, Starz is working on a new series spinoff, aiming to extend their collaboration with the executive producers of “The Serpent Queen,” Haythe and Stoff. As of now, the cast hasn’t been revealed yet, but the show’s focus will be centered around Queen Elizabeth The First.
