As an admirer who has followed Deepika Padukone‘s career since her debut in Om Shanti Om, I have always been captivated by her resilience and determination. Her journey, much like a Bollywood blockbuster, is filled with drama, challenges, and triumphs that make for an inspiring story.
Deepika Padukone first appeared on-screen alongside Shah Rukh Khan in the movie Om Shanti Om, directed by Farah Khan. Her initial acting role brought success but also attracted criticism over her accent and pronunciation. More recently, similar comments resurfaced following the release of Singham Again’s trailer. Lately, Deepika has discussed dealing with negative feedback during her debut film.
At a recent talk in the Live Love Laugh lecture series, Deepika Padukone shared an insightful conversation with Arianna Huffington. During their discussion, the actress discussed the challenges she faced with “negativity” during her first movie. She reminisced about a particularly harsh review that inspired her to focus on personal growth.
She shared, “When my first film Om Shanti Om came out, it received several negative reviews. One particular critique stood out to me, as it pointed out issues with my accent, diction, and talent. However, negativity can sometimes be beneficial; it’s all about how you choose to respond to it. The bigger question is what you do with the criticism, how you transform it into a positive perspective.
In a previous conversation with Komal Nahta, Farah Khan acknowledged that Deepika Padukone’s voice was not great at the time she worked with her. However, she added that when Deepika performed songs, her face would brighten up. The director pointed out that the actress, who is now 38, was particularly expressive during musical numbers.
She went on to disclose that although the entire film was recorded with synchronous sound (sync sound), Deepika’s voice in the movie was supplied by a different artist. She explained, “Every other element was sync sound, but her voice was dubbed. She attended diction classes, though not very seriously. But she was also taking dance classes, diction classes, and Anupam Kher’s acting school. She enrolled Deepika in everything,” she continued, “We were thoroughly preparing her for the role.
2007 saw the debut of Om Shanti Om, a film starring Deepika Padukone and Shah Rukh Khan, alongside notable actors like Arjun Rampal, Kirron Kher, Shreyas Talpade, and Bindu, each taking on significant roles.
In terms of her acting career, Deepika will soon appear in Rohit Shetty’s film titled “Singham Again.” Starring Ajay Devgn, this movie is set to hit theatres on November 1, 2024.
