As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast who’s been following the Marvel Cinematic Universe since its inception, I must say that Agatha All Along has certainly taken the cake with its latest episode. The revelation of Teen’s true identity was nothing short of exhilarating, but it seems Rio’s character is shrouded in mystery, much like a hidden health potion in an old-school RPG.
Spoilers below for the latest episode of Agatha All Along, so be warned if you haven’t yet watched.
In its fifth episode titled “Darkest Hour / Wake Thy Power,” Agatha All Along could potentially revolutionize future Marvel films and MCU TV series by finally revealing the long-anticipated secret: Joe Locke portrays Wanda’s son, Billy Kaplan/Maximoff, more commonly known as Wiccan from the comics. This exciting reveal was met with applause, but left viewers wondering about Aubrey Plaza’s character, Rio, at the end of the episode.
By the point when Agatha, Jen, and Lilia were compelled into the muddy abyss near the Witches’ Path, the green witch was already missing. And it wasn’t just this moment in the episode that left me wondering about Rio’s behavior. To clarify some puzzling aspects of Plaza’s character, let’s swiftly assemble (and borrow without shame) a makeshift broom and explore these unanswered questions together.
Why Did Rio Seem So Intimidated By Evanora Harkness’ Ghost?
Regardless of the particular scenario, Rio is an exceptionally potent figure whose powers transcend witchcraft. In Episode 4, she made a dramatic reappearance by emerging from the earth as if a resurrected zombie. However, contrary to expectations, she appeared noticeably more fragile and submissive when Agatha’s mother’s ghost appeared (Kate Forbes resuming her role).
Given our history together, it came naturally for me to stand up for Agatha when Evanora tried to persuade the witches to abandon her daughter. In my world, that’s just what a friend does.
- EVANORA: Leave her with me.
- RIO: No! No way!
- JEN: A minute ago, you were ready to slit her throat.
- RIO: Yeah, well, her mother can’t have her!
In this scene, Evanora’s anger grows, causing Rio to tone down her aggressive behavior. This could be the first time in the series where Rio appears truly concerned. Upon closer observation, it seems that Plaza’s character didn’t appear to be anxious about what might happen to Agatha, who she had already witnessed transform into a Deadite. Instead, she seemed to express concern for herself, which adds an intriguing layer to her character.
Is it possible that Rio suddenly became concerned about the possibility of being taken over by Evanora or some other spectral presence? And if Rio is in fact a manifestation of Death, would this takeover grant Evanora the ability to claim the souls of anyone she desired? This thought hadn’t crossed my mind earlier, but now it has piqued my interest and I find myself delving deeper into it.
Did Rio Tell Agatha Teen Wasn’t Her Son Just To Jumpstart Agatha’s Evil?
Towards the end of Episode 4, Rio surprised Marvel Cinematic Universe fans everywhere by interrupting what seemed like an impending kiss with Agatha, instead revealing that contrary to any assumptions or wishes, Teen is not her biological son. This revelation was emphasized when a spirit from the Ouija Board spelled out the name “Nicholas Scratch”, seemingly confirming this fact. At the time, I saw Rio’s action as an unusual act of empathy, ensuring that Agatha’s feelings weren’t misled by false hopes.
To be honest, I find myself rather foolish for even entertaining such a notion, given Rio’s nature – she’s pure chaos personified. It seems she can’t accomplish anything beneficial without setting off a chain reaction of adverse events in her wake. Now, it strikes me that Rio’s true intention might have been to restore Agatha to her former self – the manipulative, ruthless, and lethal version from the series premiere. What more effective way to do this than by targeting her deepest weakness?
Could it be that she had a premonition about the Teen’s Wiccan revelation and was attempting to shield Agatha from potential danger? This scenario could support my hypothesis that Rio pushed him through the window in the recording studio. Alternatively, perhaps her motive was to expedite the unveiling, rather than delaying it as one might expect.
What Was Rio Doing With Alice’s Body While Teen Was Busy Dunking The Other Witches In Mud?
It’s likely that many viewers would concur: Teen’s evaluation appears spot-on when suggesting Agatha had the ability to prevent herself from draining Alice’s powers and life force during Ali Ahn’s character’s attempts to expel Evanora’s ghost with fire. Agatha’s appearance no longer resembled a zombie, and there were signs she derived enjoyment from this act, although it remains unclear if she had fully returned to her usual state of mind.
It appears that Rio might have intervened to prevent what occurred, thereby saving Alice’s life, but he chose not to. Following this tragic event, those present were left in disbelief. Swiftly, Agatha ascended the stairs and exited onto the Witches’ Road, struggling to maintain Alice’s powers for only a brief moment. Then, Teen emerged, and an awe-inspiring display of Wiccan magic ensued.
Interestingly, Rio never appeared to leave the creepy cabin in the closing scenes, suggesting she didn’t participate in the other witches being drawn beneath the ground. This leads me to speculate that perhaps she was occupied with Alice’s corpse, although it remains unclear as to what exactly. I can’t help but secretly hope Rio possesses the ability to dislocate her jaw and consume adult bodies whole like an anaconda, but that might be pushing it a bit too far. (The pun is somewhat intended.)
If Rio chose not to follow the crowd, she might have been engaged in an activity requiring considerable time, leading me to ponder if Teen acted against Agatha & Co. solely because Rio wasn’t present to intervene. Given that Rio probably didn’t foresee the argument between Teen and Agatha resulting in him losing control, it’s possible she didn’t consider the situation important enough to stay with the group.
However, it’s important to note that Alice’s passing didn’t mean Evanora was no longer present in the cabin. Might it be possible that when we encounter Rio again in Episode 6, he could be under Agatha’s mother’s influence? Frankly, I’d rather not ponder the intricate psychological tangles that such a scenario might create.
