7 Bollywood movies on Netflix that we have no qualms about accepting as our biggest GUILTY PLEASURES

As a film enthusiast who has spent countless hours engrossed in the vibrant world of Bollywood, I must say these three movies have left a lasting impression on me. Each one offers a unique blend of emotion, humor, and romance that resonates deeply with my heart.

It’s possible for movies to serve as guilty pleasures. Even if you’re deeply committed to Bollywood films, there’s likely a collection of movies that may not have garnered critical acclaim, but you continue to watch them again and again. These are the movies on Netflix that make us wonder if we truly dislike or love them. They might be light on plot, but they provide pure entertainment. Why should our movie choices always be sophisticated?

7 Bollywood movies on Netflix that we secretly enjoy watching

1. Hum Saath Saath Hain

  • Cast: Mohnish Bahl, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre, Karisma Kapoor, Neelam Kothari, Mahesh Thakur, Alok Nath, Reema Lagoo
  • IMDb Rating: 6.3/10
  • Movie Genre: Family Drama
  • Release Year: 1999

Without a doubt, Hum Saath Saath Hain, a family drama directed by Sooraj Barjatya, was the go-to show for many ’90s kids on their Sundays. Despite creating unattainable ideals in relationships, this film has left an indelible mark on viewers’ hearts. In today’s world, people prioritize being logical and practical when making choices. However, despite its excessive sentimental and melodramatic elements, the film remains a beloved favorite among family members everywhere.

2. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

  • Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Salman Khan, Rani Mukerji, Fardia Jalal, Anupam Kher, Archana Puran Singh
  • IMDb Rating: 7.5/10
  • Movie Genre: Family Drama
  • Release Year: 1998

25 years on, Karan Johar’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai remains a favorite film for many of us. Despite criticizing Rahul’s actions towards Anjali following her makeover and other aspects, we still find ourselves drawn to the adorable romantic scenes in the movie. Furthermore, the nostalgic feel that the film provides is something we genuinely appreciate.

3. Indoo Ki Jawani

  • Cast: Kiara Advani, Aditya Seal, Mallika Dua, Rakesh Bedi, Iqbal Khan
  • IMDb Rating: 3.3 /10
  • Movie Genre: Comedy Drama
  • Release Year: 2020

Among the recent movies we’ve enjoyed despite ourselves is Abir Sengupta’s comedy-drama about growing up, which showcases one of Kiara Advani’s most captivating performances. While the clever dialogue, lighthearted storyline, and lively romance are predictable with some exaggerated comedic elements and cheesy romantic scenes, the film’s catchy tunes and energetic vibe keep us coming back for more. Unfortunately, it also features some stereotypical characters – a facepalm moment; however, its overall charm manages to keep us engaged.

4. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham

  • Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Amitabh Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, Jaya Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor, Jibraan Khan, Farida Jalal
  • IMDb Rating: 7.4 /10
  • Movie Genre: Family Drama
  • Release Year: 2001

Next up is Karan Johar’s Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, a film that has gained a cult following among fans such as ourselves. It’s hard to believe, after being disowned by his wealthy father, the protagonist can still maintain a lavish lifestyle not just for his family but also for his sister-in-law. We’ve watched it numerous times, and we’re still puzzled about how he manages this financially.

Despite questioning Rahul’s sudden departure from the Raichand house, Poo’s witty remarks, and Anjali’s intense emotional episodes, this series remains a show we keep coming back to watch.

5. Student Of The Year

  • Cast: Alia Bhatt, Sidharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan, Rishi Kapoor, Sana Saeed, Manjot Singh, Ronit Roy, Ram Kapoor
  • IMDb Rating: 5.3/10
  • Movie Genre: Comedy, Drama, Music, Romance
  • Release Year: 2012

Once more, Karan Johar captivated his audience with the timeless charms of a Bollywood production. True to his distinctive flair, this film showcases breathtaking scenery and catchy tunes, unfolding an enticing love triangle laced with surprising turns that elicit feelings of both aggravation and elation for every character embroiled in it.

However, one might argue that the character archetypes—a wealthy young man, a struggling boy, and a mean girl—are a bit too predictable. What truly captivates us in this story are the emotional peaks and tender moments shared by Shanaya, Rohan, and Abhimanyu, all set against a backdrop of unforgettable music.

6. I Hate Luv Storyz

  • Cast: Imran Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Samir Soni, Aamir Ali, Ketki Dave
  • IMDb Rating: 5.7/10
  • Movie Genre: Family Drama
  • Release Year: 2010

It shouldn’t come as a shock, but the movie you watched with Sonam Kapoor featuring Imran Khan was quite ironic. Despite our initial crush on Imran Khan during the romantic comedy, we can appreciate the irony. After all, it was a charming guilty pleasure directed by Punit Malhotra. The storyline revolved around a man who didn’t believe in love; however, he surprisingly fell in love himself by the end of the movie.

Excessive film romance often strays too far from reality and understanding, but Jay’s witty remarks left us laughing out loud. It goes without saying that Sonam’s portrayal of Simran embodied every romantic dreamer.

7. Hum Aapke Hain Koun

  • Cast: Salman Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Mohnish Bahl, Renuka Shahane, Alok Nath, Anupam Kher, Reema Lagoo, Bindu Desai, Satish Shah, Himani Shivpuri
  • IMDb Rating: 7.5/10
  • Movie Genre: Action, Comedy, Drama, Music
  • Release Year: 2022

Before you jump to criticizing us, let me assure you that we share your affection for the charming relationship between Nisha and Prem. The issue with Sooraj Barjatya’s film lies in its overly beautiful and idealistic portrayal. It is set in a utopian society, far removed from the harsh realities of life. Yet, despite this, we can’t help but be drawn to this pristine world every time we watch it again and again.

Hey there! I’m all for having a diverse collection of films on my watchlist – it’s like having a treasure trove of conversations waiting to happen, especially when gathered with my beloved circle of friends, right? After all, what’s better than sharing thoughts and laughter over our shared love for cinema?
