As a seasoned gamer and movie aficionado who has seen his fair share of dystopian thrillers, I must confess that I found myself intrigued by the release of The Platform 2. Having been captivated by the original, I was eager to dive back into the Pit and unravel more of its mysteries.
In 2020, “The Platform” was one of Netflix’s most-watched original films. It depicted a tower-like penal institution where food is delivered only once a day, with prisoners at the top receiving the most, while those on lower levels receive progressively less as they descend. Now, there’s a sequel, “The Platform 2”, and though it’s not impressing critics much, audiences seem eager for its 2024 Netflix premiere.
One standout thriller from Netflix, “The Platform,” made quite an impact a few years ago, despite its unusual premise about inmates in a prison eating scraps in an unconventional way. However, its message about survival in poverty, using the lens of Darwinism, was powerful and thought-provoking. This Spanish dystopian thriller presented what could occur when resources are scarce and unevenly distributed, sparking interest among both critics and viewers due to its exploration of surviving under harsh conditions. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia garnered 81% approval from critics and 73% from audiences.
Four years following the release of “The Platform”, which was viewed by more than 56 million households within four weeks as of July 2020, a sequel emerged on October 4th. The narrative centers around a fresh inmate rebelling against the enigmatic authority’s food distribution system. Although this premise may sound captivating, the film has garnered negative reviews.
Regrettably, as reported by ComicBook, “The Platform 2” hasn’t achieved the same level of success as its predecessor. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a critics’ rating of only 42%, with many commenting that it’s essentially a repetition of the first film without any fresh ideas. The audience score was similarly poor, sitting at just 26%. Many viewers felt that the sequel missed its mark in terms of the message it was trying to convey.
Although The Platform 2 didn’t receive overwhelming praise from critics and audiences, it doesn’t necessarily mean that Netflix subscribers have stopped tuning in. In fact, according to Netflix’s Global Top 10 of non-English films, the sequel has been viewed an impressive 32,600,000 hours and amassed 19,400,000 views since its release. This new sci-fi movie has only been available for less than half the time of other eligible titles, but it has attracted more viewers. It’ll be intriguing to watch how long this Netflix sequel maintains its popularity.
There’s been a lot of interest in The Platform series, making me wonder if we’ll see a third installment someday. In an interview with Kinótico (via MovieWeb), director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia stated that the possibility of a continuation hinges on the success of the second film. If the franchise were to carry on, he expressed a desire to delve deeper into the mystery of the Pit, specifically questioning “who built it, where is it located, when was it constructed, and why?” Although Netflix hasn’t officially given the go-ahead for a third movie yet, perhaps the strong viewership numbers will persuade them to reconsider.
