Andrew Garfield Says Heath Ledger Predicted ‘The Dark Knight’ Success: “He Was So Smug About It”

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of movies and their characters, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of admiration for Heath Ledger, especially after hearing Andrew Garfield‘s anecdotes about their brief encounter.

As a die-hard fan, I’m blown away by the fact that Heath Ledger foresaw the phenomenal success of “The Dark Knight” even before his untimely demise, as revealed by none other than Andrew Garfield recently.

Garfield mentioned, while speaking on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, that he met up with the late actor not long after Ledger had completed work on Christopher Nolan’s movie titled “The Dark Knight“.

Garfield remarked that Ledger seemed quite self-assured regarding his work on Nolan’s set. He inquired, ‘What was that experience like for you?’ To which Ledger responded, ‘Oh, it went well, very good indeed.’

28-year-old Heath Ledger passed away six months prior to the debut of The Dark Knight, due to an unintentional drug overdose. However, his uncanny predictions came true: The movie shattered numerous box office records, and Ledger’s portrayal of the Joker earned him a posthumous Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Even though my time collaborating with Heath Ledger was short, having worked together on the 2009 film “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus,” I can’t help but reflect on him often and the invaluable lessons he imparted to me.

He recalls a time when an issue of Empire magazine featuring him was released, and he commented something like, ‘I can’t believe they used such an unflattering picture.’ Garfield replied, ‘I can’t believe you’re complaining about that, it looks amazing!’ To which he responded, ‘No, the pose is off, it appears too conventional for an actor… exactly as you’ll see.’ And indeed, he did notice.

As a gamer, I’m fortunate to have received a pair of Ray Ban sunglasses from the generously-spirited Heath Ledger himself, who appreciated them just as much as I do. He was more than an actor; he was a beacon of creativity and kindness, as wild and captivating as a free spirit in the digital world we share.

In a continuation of his remarks about The Amazing Spider-Man co-star, he added, “He had an uncanny knack for being free, wild, and even a bit dangerous on set in a way that was both inspiring and spontaneous. Before every take or occasionally between scenes, he would always say, ‘Let’s add some fun to this!’

As a devoted admirer, I can tell you that Garfield’s knack for maintaining a spontaneous spirit carries over into his acting today. In a heartfelt conversation with IndieWire, he expressed his concern about our current disconnection from ourselves and death, stating, “We are much less intimate with ourselves, and we’re much less intimate with death. Our feelings. Reality. Actually, we’re much less intimate with reality. There’s such a kind of dividedness around how we experience the world now, and I think it feels like this is a film filled with longing in that way.

Garfield pointed out that the absence of a connection has resulted in a shift in how sex and intimacy are portrayed in movies. He’s hoping that his upcoming movie titled “We Live In Time” will bring about a change in this depiction.

Garfield added, “The movie seems to hail from another time, as people today tend to be more cautious, suspicious, distant, and divided. We’re also less intimate due to these factors.

He added, “I believe there’s a deep desire, whether it’s subconscious or conscious, among viewers to witness such intimate connections portrayed on screen. It seems to me that this could serve as a charming reflection and motivation for many.

We Live In Time hit theaters Oct. 18.
