Ridley Scott’s upcoming movie “Gladiator II” will kick off its Asian screening tour in Japan. The Tokyo International Film Festival announced on Friday that it will be hosting the Asian premiere of this epic sequel on November 5, which is over two weeks before its North American release on November 22 during the Thanksgiving weekend. This screening represents a significant win for Japan’s foremost film festival, as it has struggled in recent years to attract Hollywood premieres due to studios focusing their marketing strategies more on China’s previously thriving box office.
Scott is unable to participate in Japan’s festival red carpet event, but the cast of “Gladiator II” will make a strong appearance at its Tokyo premiere instead. The lead actor, Paul Mescal, is looking forward to his inaugural trip to Japan for the special screening. He’ll be accompanied by fellow actors Denzel Washington, Fred Hechinger, and Connie Nielsen, as well as “Gladiator II” producers Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher.
The Tokyo Festival has announced that it will specifically showcase a new category called “Centerpiece Screening,” which is designed to feature the Paramount Pictures action-adventure movie.
The festival’s organizers expressed their optimism that our movie will draw a large audience at the 37th Tokyo International Film Festival, potentially making it one of the memorable films of the year,” the group stated.
The first “Gladiator” movie, garnering five Academy Awards, grossed a total of $465.4 million worldwide. In Asia, it was particularly successful in Japan, where it generated $15.5 million, making it the film’s highest-earning market in that region and the seventh highest-grossing globally.
In “Gladiator II,” the narrative unfolds with a fresh tale that transpires over a decade post the initial film’s events. The character of Lucius Verus II, originally crafted by David Franzoni, is now portrayed as an adult by actor Mescal. In the original story, Joaquin Phoenix played Commodus, Lucius’ uncle; here, Lucius finds himself enslaved and, instead of ruling, he takes up the mantle of a gladiator seeking vengeance and power. Washington stars as Macrinus, a prosperous political figure and arms dealer in this new setting.
Tokyo Film Festival’s artistic director Shozo Ichiyama justified the selection by stating, “Gladiator II boasts an outstanding ensemble cast that’s currently enjoying a surge in popularity and a scale that dwarfs its predecessor. We are privileged to present Gladiator II as our Centerpiece, a film that is undoubtedly one of the most highly anticipated movies globally this year.
