For example, Doomsday, who fought Superman to the death in “Superman” #75, isn’t as powerful when pitted against ancient cosmic parasites or entities capable of destroying entire universes.
In the realm of DC Comics, over time, a general pecking order of villainy has been informally created. However, there’s no formal ranking system for these nefarious characters. That’s where we step in: From ancient warlords and renegade Kryptonians to the ruler of the dead and beyond, there are some truly formidable beings in the DC Universe. Here, we present our top choices for the most powerful villains within this universe, listed from least to most potent.
11. Vandal Savage
Under the moniker Vandal Savage, it’s clear this formidable adversary intends serious trouble. However, his most terrifying nicknames don’t stop there. Being an immortal warlord, he’s lived for eons, adopting numerous personas: He has taken on roles as diverse as Genghis Khan, Alexander the Great, and Julius Caesar; Vlad the Impaler, Jack the Ripper, and even claimed to be Cain from the Bible – the first murderer who killed his brother Abel. At one time, he declared himself to be the biblical Cain.
A villain named Savage, who debuted in the 10th issue of “Green Lantern” in 1943, was granted eternal life by a falling meteorite and developed into an exceptionally ruthless military strategist over time. 8. Superboy-Prime
Among the debatable antagonists in the DC Universe, Superboy-Prime serves as a violent and ominous rendition of Superman. Desire’s longstanding conflict with his brother Dream nearly brought about the world’s end, as shown when he manipulated situations to transform his granddaughter, Rose Walker, into a Vortex – a being capable of collapsing the boundaries between dreamers’ minds and potentially disintegrating the very essence of reality.
Fortunately, Desire’s elaborate scheme to manipulate Dream into killing Rose fell flat, as the universe’s destiny seemed unimportant to the narcissistic immortal. As the embodiment of desire itself, with the power to grant or withdraw love, Desire holds immense influence over the DC Universe. It is perhaps their self-centered personality that keeps them from being a more dangerous adversary — a fact for which every DC superhero should be grateful.
5. Darkseid
Born by the renowned Jack Kirby as the personification of Evil, Darkseid stands among the most legendary DC Comics villains, and his notoriety is well-deserved. As ruler of the dismal planet Apokolips, he is a ruthless, unyielding despot who commands legions of Parademons, unleashes devastating Omega Beams from his eyes, and has left entire worlds in ruins as he searches for the elusive Anti-Life Equation. A relentless adversary to Superman, the Justice League, and the deities of New Genesis, Darkseid’s ambition is to extinguish all free will and assert his dominion over the cosmos. He holds faith that obtaining the Equation will enable him to achieve this end.
In the seven-issue series spanning from 2008 to 2009, titled “Final Crisis,” Darkseid reveals the Anti-Life Equation. This powerful tool allows him to manipulate almost every mind on Earth, transforming it into a catastrophic singularity that threatens to tear apart reality itself. Despite Superman’s efforts and the use of a Miracle Machine, Earth narrowly escapes destruction. However, in an extraordinary turn of events, Darkseid pushes Batman, one of DC Comics’ most esteemed heroes, to an unimaginable act: In his desperate attempt to stop Darkseid, Batman resorts to using a Radion bullet, a weapon with tragic personal connections, as it was responsible for the death of his parents. Regardless of his origins, Trigon is an interdimensional demon of immeasurable power who wiped out countless civilizations. He is also a strong candidate for the worst dad in DC history (and there are plenty of contenders), siring multiple children across eons in order to extend the reach of his evil empire. This has led to plenty of discussion on Reddit, where DC fans have brought up his terrible parenting. “He only had children to take over worlds, no love at all,” wrote u/Nateddog21.
The half-human superheroine Raven, who happens to be the villain’s daughter in the DC universe, established the New Teen Titans due to her father, Trigon. Her motivation was to prevent Trigon’s takeover of Earth and combat his demonic control over her own soul. However, Trigon is not just a wicked father figure – he embodies the darkness that resides within humanity, making him truly chilling. This villain is one you definitely do not want to encounter.
3. Nekron
In much the same way as we have sinister figures in our world, one of the most terrifying and potent antagonists in the DC Comics universe is none other than death itself. The skeletal figure armed with a scythe known as Nekron reigns over the realm of the deceased, and he’s one of several embodiments of death in DC mythology. Utilizing dark magic or necromancy, he often ventures between dimensions to clash with the Green Lantern Corps. It’s when he forges the Black Power Rings that Nekron poses a threat to all life across the cosmos.
During the 2009-2010 comic book crossover event “Blackest Night,” the character Nekron captures the Anti-Monitor for energy and brings back to life deceased superheroes and villains as Black Lanterns, which are essentially undead beings. This includes loved ones who tragically passed away during events like the destruction of Green Lantern Hal Jordan’s hometown Coast City and the deaths of Donna Troy’s husband and child. This dark plotline is intense, and it happens because Nekron possesses immense power.
In this storyline, Nekron manages to enlist some well-known characters into his horde of undead: Reimagined versions of Green Arrow, Wonder Woman, and even Superman rise as Black Lanterns. However, Nekron’s wicked schemes are thwarted when Hal Jordan unites with the cosmic Life Entity, transforming him into a White Lanent. As a result, Nekron is banished once more to the Realm of the Departed. But one must ponder if death can ever truly be vanquished?
2. The Anti-Monitor
If we were to rank DC’s most lethal supervillains based solely on body count, the Anti-Monitor would undoubtedly top the list. This formidable adversary was the antagonist of the influential “Crisis on Infinite Earths” maxiseries, where he brought about the destruction of the DC multiverse. In the process, he wiped out countless worlds and their inhabitants. Originating from the antimatter universe, the Anti-Monitor stands in opposition to his counterpart from the matter universe, the Monitor.
The Anti-Monitor has the power to release universe-annihilating antimatter waves, feeding on the energy of their destruction. When encased in his armored suit at full power, the Anti-Monitor has near-unlimited strength and energy and was directly responsible for the deaths of Supergirl and Barry Allen’s Flash. When the Anti-Monitor attempted to alter the course of history by traveling to the beginning of time, it took the combined powers of the universe’s remaining heroes and villains (and a punch into a star by Superman of Earth-Two) to end the Anti-Monitor’s threat.
Despite his subsequent resurrection (becoming a member of the Sinestro Corps as their “Fear Guardian”) and numerous other catastrophic “Crisis” events faced by DC heroes, the atrocities committed by the Anti-Monitor during “Crisis on Infinite Earths” remain indelibly etched in our memories. To put it simply, there’s no doubt that he is one of the most powerful villains in the DC universe.
1. Perpetua
From a diehard DC fan’s perspective, it’s undeniable that the most formidable supervillain in the DC Universe is none other than the creator of it all – Perpetua, the Super Celestial. This godlike entity, endowed with near-omnipotent powers, orchestrated the birth of the first version of the multiverse with the Big Bang. Instead of fulfilling her intended fate and returning to the cosmos after her death, she defied it all, maintaining control over the now unstable multiverse.
Accompanying her celestial prowess, Perpetua harnesses energy from cataclysmic Crises, granting her the power to obliterate realities and modify the universe as she pleases. In “Dark Nights: Death Metal” of 2020, she engaged in combat with the Justice League, teaming up with a wicked version of Batman known as The Batman Who Laughs to redesign the multiverse, making evil the dominant force. Perpetua met her end when The Batman who Laughs deceived her and siphoned her Crisis Energy during a cosmic struggle. Despite being defeated, the influence of Perpetua in DC history is undeniable, and one could argue that she serves as the originator of all evil within the DC Universe.
