Bristol Building With Early Banksy Mural to Hit Auction

As a seasoned art enthusiast with a knack for finding hidden gems, I can confidently say that owning a building adorned by Banksy’s elusive and thought-provoking street art is nothing short of a dream come true. The thrill of uncovering such a treasure, much like the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb, is exhilarating.

Purchasing real estate in any major city is typically expensive, but consider this unique opportunity: A building in Bristol is going up for auction, featuring an original Banksy mural. This piece, titled “Mild Mild West“, showcases a bear hurling a Molotov cocktail at the police, and was created by Banksy in 1999, following a warehouse party that was interrupted by the authorities.

Initially purchased in 2000 for a relatively low $71,000 USD, this building was empty at that time. Today, it accommodates four bedrooms and a barber shop on the ground floor. When offered for sale, it’s projected to fetch around a million dollars. The listing reads: “This property is associated with the enigmatic and globally recognized street artist Banksy, known for his satirical, anti-establishment, and intellectually stimulating artworks. Potential buyers are encouraged to conduct their own investigations.

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a thrill at the prospect of owning either a Banksy piece or a structure adorned by his art, knowing that prints and editions typically range from $50 to a staggering half a million dollars, while original works easily surpass the millions. However, there have been instances where the public fervor has reached such heights that an owner of a building in London’s Shoreditch neighborhood decided to cover up Banksy’s Happy Choppers mural due to nightly crowds gathering around it, triggering a security light. The following year, he sold the building.

The new proprietor was leafing through the book “Banksy Captured”, when a structure similar to his own appeared with a bear mural on one side. This caused him to venture outside, where he found a black wall that piqued his curiosity about what might be hidden beneath it. After undergoing an extensive restoration, the artwork titled “Happy Choppers” reappeared and was subsequently divided into eight sections, which fetched $2.7 million USD at Sotheby’s auction in 2023.
