As a long-time art enthusiast who’s been to more galleries than I can count (and lost count along the way), I must say that Ojiri Gallery’s latest group exhibition, “Not Invited!”, is a breath of fresh, vibrant, and thought-provoking air. The show masterfully navigates the line between familiarity and mystery, inviting us to ponder the raw, often contradictory nature of being human.
As Frieze London concludes, Ojiri Gallery unveils an enticing group exhibition titled “Not Invited!“. This show takes viewers on a whimsical yet lively exploration of authenticity, displaying pieces by Baldur Helgason, Izumi Kato, Nigel Howlett, Dustin Emory, Max Rumbol, and Kila Cheung.
As I stepped into the Not Invited! exhibit, I felt like I was diving headfirst into a vibrant world of my childhood favorites – cartoon and video game characters that instantly sparked a sense of nostalgic awe within me. The blend of hybrid figures and twisted forms created an intriguing tension between familiar comfort and unsettling confinement, drawing me in with its eerie ambiguity.
In this gaming world, I find myself wandering through an exhibit that delves deep into the complexities of being human. From the flawless, polished robot in Howlett’s “Neither Revealed Nor Hidden” to Helgason’s vibrant, expressive grins, these pieces challenge what lurks beneath their layers of oil, acrylic, and pastel.
