As a fan who has been following Ella Purnell‘s career since her days in “Never Let Me Go,” I have to say that Sweetpea is a testament to her versatility as an actress and Starz’s knack for producing thought-provoking content. The show’s blend of dark comedy, feminist themes, and complex characters is nothing short of extraordinary.
If you’ve been following the 2024 TV lineup, you’d recognize that Starz recently debuted a fresh series titled “Sweetpea, starring Ella Purnell.” Although the show delves into multiple themes, Purnell shared that while it may be challenging to explain, there’s an aspect of “Sweetpea” that everyone can connect with.
If you haven’t yet discovered it, I’m excited to share that ‘Sweetpea’, now streaming, offers a unique blend of dark comedy and drama. As a character named Rhiannon (played by Purnell), I find myself, much like the audience, drawn into her transformative journey. Throughout her life, she’s been overlooked, but when she decides to take matters into her own hands against those who exploit her, she gains newfound confidence – and there are plenty of unexpected twists and turns along the way.
The narrative revolves around the emergence of female anger, exploring themes that resonate deeply with women. In the first episode, the protagonist Rhiannon experiences disrespect and patronizing treatment at work, endures public discomfort on the bus due to manspreading, and maintains a forced smile despite her mounting frustration – she’s unable to assert herself.
For the actress known for her role in Fallout, it’s not a new experience to tackle intricate characters that push her limits. Many viewers can identify with the situations they find themselves in. She has previously lent her voice to Jinx, the antihero/villain of Arcane, and appeared as a cast member in Season 1 of Yellowjackets. In addition, she plays Lucy, the main character in Fallout, whose life is riddled with sorrow and drama (which will continue to unfold in Fallout Season 2).
Rhiannon serves as another compelling illustration – she’s a multifaceted character who ultimately grows to respect and value herself so strongly that she confronts those who undermine her. While some viewers might find this action a bit extreme, there’s a subtle aspect of the storyline that could inspire admiration for Rhiannon’s self-assertion: as Purnell explained further.
As a gamer, I often find myself rooting for the protagonist who’s been through so much. By the time she finally asserts herself, even though her actions might seem unimaginable and horrific, there’s a tiny corner in your heart that whispers, ‘Wow, how much can one person endure?’ There’s a sense of admiration too. I always see it this way: if you take away the violence, it’s actually an endearing tale about a woman discovering her strength and standing up for herself. It’s just that she sometimes takes an unusual path to get there.
There are certainly some great coming-of-age comedies out there, but Sweetpea takes the cake if you needed a dark comedy version of it—and Rhiannon is the perfect example of a character who just takes it to another level of becoming secure in oneself, if not a little too far.
