Wicked’s Broadway Poster Reimagining Spark Backlash from Fans

Wicked's Broadway Poster Reimagining Spark Backlash from Fans

As a seasoned movie buff who has weathered countless cinematic storms and fads, I must say that the anticipation surrounding “Wicked” in 2024 is palpable. However, with great expectations come the risk of great disappointment, and from what I’ve seen so far, it seems that fans might just be setting themselves up for a bit of a letdown – at least when it comes to their beloved poster.

It’s widely expected that one of the most eagerly awaited films set to release in 2024 will not disappoint, but there is a significant risk that the high anticipation could result in some fans being let down. Previewing what’s to come, social media users have been critically analyzing the latest promotional material for the musical adaptation; specifically, a replica of the original Broadway poster.

Although it might appear straightforward to revamp the original Wicked artwork featuring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, fans have expressed their dissatisfaction by labeling the alterations as “inexpensive” and criticizing a minor but significant modification in the design. Since Wicked is poised to compete with Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II at the box office this November, it may still encounter displeased fans who voice their concerns on social media.

One of the biggest gripes about the latest poster focuses on the face of Elphaba. The original Broadway poster has the character’s face obscured by her hat, with only a red-lipped smirk visible, while her fellow witch, Glinda whispers in her ear. The new version makes one major change to this, by showing Erivo’s whole face, without red lipstick or the trademark smirk. This initially led to many airing their thoughts on X/Twitter, which was followed by several users “fixing” the poster.

What Have Fans Been Saying About The Latest Wicked Poster?

On social media, everyone seems to be an opinionated critic, and voicing thoughts through a keyboard often feels like a low-risk way of participating in public discussions. Although no harsh or excessive comments have been made about the new poster for Wicked, there’s definitely been a significant number of people expressing disappointment with the latest marketing strategy.

User AmandaGalis expressed her disappointment by saying, “This film could potentially be the most unattractive movie ever made; I can’t believe they botched the Wicked poster this much.” Firebison, another Reddit user, agreed and added, “It looks terrible. It has a stare-at-the-camera moment reminiscent of The Office. It feels like an insult to the original smirk/feel of the poster. It’s almost as if it was taken from a cheap early 2000s Disney show.

X user midosommar took things one step further, sharing their own doctored version of the artwork.

It’s important to note that not everyone criticized the poster; some fans were quite enthusiastic, like Buffys on X/Twitter who exclaimed in capital letters, “THIS IS THE BEST POSTER YET! WE CAN’T WAIT TO WATCH IT IN THEATERS.” Given that this film falls under a genre often divisive in cinema, it’s expected that varying opinions will emerge in the initial reviews. The challenge for Wicked lies in satisfying those who have attended the stage show numerous times while also appealing to those who typically steer clear of musical movies where characters frequently break into song and everyone seems well-versed in dance routines.

International box office competition kicks off in an unusual sequence this coming November. The Jon M. Chu film will debut in Australia on November 3, clash with Gladiator II in the United States on November 22, and expand to other locations like the U.K. on November 27.
