Dominique Review: Oksana Orlan's Phenomenal in Hardcore Action Thriller

As a seasoned action movie enthusiast who’s seen more than my fair share of explosions, car chases, and one-liners, I can confidently say that Oksana Orlan’s ‘Dominique’ is an exhilarating rollercoaster ride that will leave you breathless. This film is a testament to the power of unexpected plot twists and relentless action sequences, all wrapped in a package that initially seems like just another VOD entry.

In the intense, action-packed movie titled “Dominique“, Oksana Orlan, who has transitioned from modeling to acting, writing, and producing, promises an adrenaline rush like no other. Be prepared for a beating and a broken foot – she means business! Initially appearing as just another forgettable direct-to-video action flick, the movie takes a sharp turn when its first act delivers a shocking plot twist. From that point on, no character is safe, especially with the arrival of ruthless and brutal villains. So, brace yourself for moments of shock, awe, and even heartbreak – this film breaks all rules and boundaries.

In the scorching La Guajira desert of Colombia, members of the ruthless De La Cruz cartel drive up in a red Jeep towards their new target, having just shot down an assumed rival drug plane. The wreckage is examined cautiously by Hector (David M Sandoval Jr.). The front of the plane remains undamaged. Upon opening the door, he signals his men to lift a bulky wooden crate secured with chains. It’s heavy and difficult to open. Hector swears at their clumsiness. They don’t know what lies within. However, an unexpected discovery awaits him in the cockpit: a stunning blonde woman (Orlan) lies unconscious. The lewd Hector sees a wicked opportunity, but it quickly slips away.

Dominique Wastes No Time

Following her arrival in San Lucas, Dominique spends a solitary evening at a bar, until Julio (Sebastián Carvajal) joins her at her table. He advises her to stay vigilant, as San Lucas is controlled by wicked individuals. Ignoring his warning, she quickly develops an interest in Julio’s good looks and they engage in a one-night stand. Upon waking up the following day, she finds herself gazing out of Julio’s window, where his sister Paulina (Maria del Rosario), who is pregnant, and several children are present nearby. Julio then clarifies that they are his family, as their father had recently passed away.

Dominique is introduced with a straightforward narrative, quickly establishing her and other main characters – Julio, Paulina, their three children, and an elderly father in a wheelchair. They are all seemingly decent individuals caught up in a dangerous web. Everybody is captivated by the fearless woman seated at the breakfast table, who appears battered. Her origins are mysterious, and there seems to be a bullet wound on her scalp. Dominique radiates a subtle yet threatening presence. She shows no signs of being intimidated by her predicament, suggesting she’s capable of managing herself in this hostile environment. This “gringa” appears tough and resilient.

The story becomes more complicated when the cartel discovers the bodies of their men. Hector wasn’t an insignificant person, whoever harmed him will face a dreadful retribution. The movie doesn’t hold back in depicting the vast influence and twisted revenge tactics of the cartel. Julio isn’t naive; he’s well aware of the cartel’s actions. Dominique arrives injured, Hector goes missing. It doesn’t take a genius to understand what’s unfolding. They’ll mete out gruesome punishments on anyone who assists their adversaries. Even pregnant women and children aren’t exempt from this terror. Could helping Dominique put everyone in grave danger?

Unpredictable, Jaw-Dropping, and Action-Packed

Dominique Review: Oksana Orlan's Phenomenal in Hardcore Action Thriller

In his latest work, director and writer Michael S. Ojeda, known for collaborating with Orlan on “The Russian Bride”, masterfully creates a whirlwind of suspense in the second act, with a shocking revelation that leaves audiences speechless. The ensuing events are raw, unsettling, and significantly alter the narrative’s perspective. Ojeda demonstrates his skill by avoiding predictability. He skillfully lures the audience into a false sense of comfort, before delivering an unexpected punch to the story that feels like a powerful freight train impact. Ojeda pushes the tension to its maximum limit, forcing Dominique to make a difficult decision: either act on her conscience or allow a dire situation to worsen. This is no small feat for someone who has always prioritized self-preservation.

Dominique’s action sequences are extraordinary, displaying an uncanny ability to outwit her enemies consistently, yet maintaining a sense of realism. Her adversaries often underestimate her lethal potential, only to suffer repeated defeats. One might wonder how a single “gringa” could be so deadly? The secret lies in Dominique’s strategic thinking, as she skillfully leverages every advantage and turns her attackers’ perceived strengths into weaknesses. Her actions are nothing short of amazing, even shockingly realistic. It is uncommon to witness an action hero execute strategies so meticulously on screen. Dominique carries out her well-orchestrated plans flawlessly, leaving a trail of bodies in her wake.

Oksana Orlan Is Excellent, but Dominique Has One Major Disappointment

Orlan skillfully demonstrates agility in a physically intense act. The character of Dominique undergoes significant transformation. She isn’t merely a ruthless, cold-blooded assassin. Instead, the characters Julio, Paulina, and particularly the endearing children stir empathy within her. As Dominique learns to empathize, she discovers that having feelings and caring can also expose vulnerabilities, creating weaknesses in her protective shell. This development results in a surprisingly compelling action movie that’s both brutal and captivating.

Regrettably, even though the ending of the movie was intensely emotional, its conclusion seemed like a major letdown – it used freeze-framed scenes during the credits to convey it. It might have been incredibly expensive to shoot in live-action, but it definitely left a disappointing impression. However, for action enthusiasts, Dominique is absolutely worth watching.

The film titled “Dominique” was jointly produced by Agora Films, Green Dog Films, and Reigning Entertainment. At present, you can stream it on demand via Lionsgate. Click the link below to start watching.
