Having closely followed Cristin Milioti’s character Hazel Green’s journey through two seasons, I can empathize with her struggle to move forward while holding onto the past. This narrative mirrors our own complex relationship with technology and artificial intelligence, a theme that resonates strongly in today’s world.
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, let me tell you, I’m thoroughly captivated by Colin Farrell’s metamorphosis into Max’s The Penguin’s antagonist – it’s truly mesmerizing! Yet, what left many of us stunned is the exceptional performance delivered by Cristin Milioti as Sophia Falcone. In the gripping world of Gotham City, Milioti portrays Carmine Falcone’s daughter with such intensity that her presence on screen feels both unsettling and enthralling.
Made for Love, originally based on a novel by Alissa Nutting, combines elements of science fiction and dark humor over the course of two captivating seasons. Unfortunately, it was prematurely terminated, but despite this, it continues to be overlooked, showcasing Militi’s impressive talent years ago.
Made For Love Is a Modern Look at How Technology and Relationships Collide
At the start of “Made for Love”, viewers are introduced to CEO Byron Gogol (portrayed by Billy Magnusson) and his wife, Hazel Green, acted by Cristin Milioti. When Hazel decides to flee from her high-tech, never-before-left luxury compound after a decade, she uncovers that she has a device in her head which monitors her actions continuously. This tracking device was inserted by Byron, who knew all along that Hazel wanted to depart.
In her hometown, Hazel reunites with her dad, Herbert Green (Ray Romano). The encounter between them is uneasy, but in the meantime, she chooses to stay with him as she contemplates her future moves. As Christina Lee, the show’s executive producer, explains, Made for Love centers around a poignant father-daughter narrative that guides Hazel through her relationship with her dad and eventually leads her back to her husband.
Viewers get insights into Hazel’s past relationship with Byron via flashbacks, and she uses the device in her head to annoy her husband by sending him messages. In the first season, Hazel signs divorce papers but later reconsiders and remains married. The second season resumes with Hazel and Byron, but ultimately, Hazel gains power over Byron, his business, and their future.
Made for Love Was Startlingly Close to What Could Happen In the Not-So-Distant Future
In 2021, Christina Lee, the executive producer of Made for Love, shared that Byron drew inspiration from Elon Musk to some extent. She stated this to Deadline.
Admittedly, we spent quite a bit of time viewing videos featuring Elon Musk, including one with his former wife Talulah Riley. It was intriguing to us. While Byron is not based on Elon Musk, there are certain elements influenced by them both being tech pioneers.
In a different phrasing, Cristin Milioti views her character, Hazel Green, as an individual who grapples constantly with moral dilemmas while holding onto the past. Consequently, Hazel’s predicament of losing her father and being pregnant at the end of Season 2 symbolizes a desire to progress but reluctance to let go of the past. This can be likened to society’s apprehension towards technology, particularly AI, where there is a fear that its advancement may impact jobs, environment, and other significant societal structures.
Milioti harbored great expectations about the potential third season of “Made for Love”. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actress shared her desires for Hazel’s development if the series were to continue.
“I would want to explore all the things we’re talking about: What does someone who has gone through what she’s gone through do with that much power? And she’s really unpredictable. You’re always like, ‘Oh God, don’t do that.’ She can’t really communicate well, she doesn’t think before she leaps, all these things, but you still really understand why. And I wonder now that she is untethered, I would want to explore what that does to someone like Hazel. Fingers crossed. We’ll see.”
Unfortunately, neither Cristin nor the fans will ever get to find out.
Made for Love Was Axed After the Formation of Warner Bros. Discovery
Made For Love was well-received by audiences and critics alike. Ben Travers from IndieWire said:
As a devoted fan, I must say that Herbert’s (Ray Romano) heartfelt and authentic vibe brings a soothing balm to the tumultuous emotional rift between Hazel (Cristin Milioti) and Byron (Billy Magnussen). Despite the show’s broader satirical commentary on tech developers exploiting people’s deepest fears, Herbert serves as a testament that Made For Love is rooted in reality. After all, genuine love can never be measured; it can only be experienced deeply.
Given a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it seemed certain the series would continue for a third season. However, the merger between WarnerMedia (the parent company of HBO Max) and Discovery Inc. triggered significant shifts within the streaming landscape. The union formed Warner Bros. Discovery, which led to budget reductions, cancellations of shows, and a general restructuring across the board.
After Made for Love was canceled, a representative from HBO Max issued a statement:
We’re deeply appreciative for the incredible, memorable ride we’ve had over the last two seasons, thanks to Alissa Nutting, Christina Lee, Cristin, Billy, Ray, and the whole cast and crew of Made For Love. Just like a Gogol chip, this series will forever linger in our thoughts.
To make matters worse, Made for Love was removed from HBO Max’s streaming service as well.
