OPINION: Cinematic universes like spy, cop and supernatural to change the way audiences look towards entertainment?

As a film enthusiast who has been following the Indian cinema scene for decades, I must say that the rise of cinematic universes in Bollywood is indeed an exciting development. From the YRF Spy Universe to Rohit Shetty’s Cop Universe, these shared worlds have brought together some of our most beloved stars and delivered blockbuster hits.

Over the last year, there’s been plenty of discussion about the expanding film universes in Bollywood. The recent hits like Pathaan, Stree 2, and numerous universe movies on the horizon suggest this trend might be shaping the industry’s future. Even though these films have raked in impressive box office earnings, they’re not without their exceptions. Here are my thoughts on whether universes such as spy, cop, and supernatural genres will influence how viewers perceive entertainment.

The YRF Spy Universe, known for hits like Tiger franchise starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, War featuring Hrithik Roshan, and more recently Pathaan with Shah Rukh Khan, has had great success at the box office. However, previous success doesn’t automatically guarantee future projects will be just as successful.

It’s understandable given that sequels often build upon the excitement from their earlier parts, especially when they promise character crossovers that fans are eager for. The eagerness for War 2 is palpable, as well as the anticipation of Alia Bhatt joining the Universe through Alpha. Additionally, Tiger vs Pathaan holds great potential to be a blockbuster, with SRK and Salman sharing the screen once more.

Although Tiger 3 was released during Diwali, a period known for its box office success due to the Tiger franchise’s reputation, it fell short in garnering favorable reviews and earnings compared to what was expected.

In the Maddock Supernatural Universe, Bhediya didn’t perform exceptionally well initially. This could be due to the fact that the universe wasn’t interconnected prior to the film’s premiere. However, anticipation is high for Bhediya 2. Interestingly, a low-budget movie named Munjya became successful before Stree 2 shattered all box office records. Given the current popularity of horror comedies, I believe this genre could continue to captivate audiences in the coming years as well.

As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that Rohit Shetty’s Cinematic Cosmos is all set for a spectacular Diwali premiere with the return of Singham. A stellar lineup including Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, Akshay Kumar, Arjun Kapoor, Tiger Shroff, and Jackie Shroff are uniting on the silver screen in this exciting venture. Having tasted success, this Universe promises to continue its victorious journey.

As a die-hard movie buff, I can’t help but notice the allure of sequels, franchises, and interconnected universes that seem to be the trend these days. However, there are smaller-budget films like “Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya”, “Article 370”, and others that have proven their worth and held their own in the cinematic landscape.

From my perspective, it boils down to the enjoyment aspect. Though universes are undeniably popular now and look set to remain so for a while, their lasting impact will hinge on the value they provide to viewers.
