Actor Simu Liu, famous for his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Shang-Chi, is urging fans to halt their threatening messages towards a small business. Known for his upcoming MCU roles, Liu recently appeared on CBC’s Dragon’s Den – Canada’s equivalent of Shark Tank. During this appearance, he criticized a boba company for cultural appropriation. This clip spread rapidly online, leading some enthusiastic fans to express their views directly with the targeted business. Unfortunately, these expressions have crossed into harassment and, in some cases, even death threats.
Following reports of death threats, Liu decided to speak out on TikTok regarding the controversy surrounding the TV show and the harsh responses from certain fans. He started his video by emphasizing the importance of the conversation about cultural appropriation they had initiated. During the episode, Liu criticized two entrepreneurs for potentially exploitative practices by reproducing a product that has deep Asian roots and heritage. In the video, Liu reiterated his stance from the show, maintaining that he was right in calling them out.
“I’m curious about when something moves from being a tribute or homage to exploitation. I’ve found an overwhelming sense of positivity and support from people across various communities, which is truly amazing and I’m deeply grateful for it.
‘It’s Never Okay To Make Threats. It’s Never Okay to Bully and Harass Online’
In my perspective, during the six-minute video, Liu steered the conversation towards a somber tone as he tackled the intense enthusiasm of some fans misinterpreting his message. To wrap up, he clarified the underlying purpose of his initial confrontation with the company on Dragon’s Den. As Simu Liu put it, his objective was to enlighten viewers, consumers, and businesses at large, not to launch a direct assault against the innovative entrepreneurs who were showcasing their ideas. He made this clear by stating:
To provide a contrasting perspective, it has been brought to light that these business owners have faced numerous death threats, harassment, bullying, and even ‘dogpiling.’ I feel compelled to state unequivocally: such behavior is never acceptable. It’s never right to issue threats, and it’s never appropriate to bully or harass online.
My aim is to ensure that this segment isn’t remembered for inciting fear or creating an atmosphere of danger. Instead, I want us to focus on the core essence which is learning, improving our world, and fostering awareness about behaviors that are culturally unacceptable. Essentially, we’re here to teach, make a difference, and spread understanding.
It turns out that Simu Liu’s character Shang-Chi, initially highly anticipated and considered one of the most promising in the MCU, has not been utilized as much as fans had hoped. The announcement of his solo movie sparked immense excitement among fans, with many eagerly awaiting its release, which was eventually hailed as one of the finest productions in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
