Shah Rukh Khan recalls being anxious while making Devdas; 'Started drinking after the film'

As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for the intricacies of Hollywood and Bollywood, I must say that Shah Rukh Khan’s journey in portraying Devdas is nothing short of captivating. His ability to delve deep into his character and convey the complexities of emotion through his performance is truly commendable.

One version of Devdas is a classic tale that various directors have adapted with their distinctive styles. In 2002, Sanjay Leela Bhansali cast Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, and Madhuri Dixit to portray this timeless romance from his perspective. The film became one of the most memorable productions in their respective careers. However, King Khan expressed that he didn’t aspire for viewers to admire his character. He also shared memories of resorting to alcohol during the making of this heart-wrenching love saga.

This year, I found myself utterly captivated as I watched Shah Rukh Khan grace a prestigious award stage, sharing insights about his remarkable film journey and the timeless movies that continue to resonate within us fans. As he delved into the saga of Devdas, the Jawan star confessed a unique desire – he didn’t seek our affection for him, nor did he aim to elicit our disdain. Instead, he expressed a yearning for the character to be enigmatic, not for us to appreciate his alcoholism and flight from love, but rather for Devdas to remain a character that defies description.

During the filming process, he acknowledged feeling quite nervous, leading him to resort to alcohol. When asked if this aided his performance, he replied, “Perhaps it assisted, but I began drinking after the movie, and that’s one drawback.” Jokingly, he mentioned that he received the Best Actor award for Devdas, which is based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel.

During the festive gathering, the King of Romance disclosed that he took on the role due to a personal connection – he felt certain that his late mother, Lateef Fatima, would have admired and enjoyed it. He explained, “I sensed that if I brought Devdas to life, she would take great pride in it.” Furthermore, he acknowledged the exceptional performances of actors like Dilip Kumar, KL Saigal, and Uttam Kumar in their previous portrayals of the character, and felt compelled to follow suit. SRK shared that making grand films allows him to believe his parents are watching them from above.
