As a film enthusiast with a soft spot for animated movies, I find myself deeply captivated by Chris Sanders’ passionate journey with The Wild Robot. Having grown up in Colorado, I can relate to his fondness for the transition from summer to fall, as it resonates with my own childhood memories. The scenes he cherishes the most – the departure of Brightbill and the subsequent “Signal” sequence – seem to encapsulate that bittersweet feeling of change, a sentiment that artists have beautifully translated in this film.
This week, the animated science fiction film “The Wild Robot,” directed by Chris Sanders, will be released in cinemas. In this movie, a service robot named Roz (voiced by Lupita Nyong’o) finds itself stranded on an isolated island following a shipwreck. As it adapts to its new environment, Roz also becomes the surrogate mother to an orphaned goose called Brightbill (played by Kit Connor).
Prior to the premiere of the film, TopMob had a private conversation with director Sanders where they discussed Sanders’ favorite scenes from The Wild Robot.
In our discussion, Chris Sanders referred to the task of selecting his scenes as an “enchanting dilemma,” expressing that he’s never encountered a film project before where each sequence left him torn between exclaiming, “This is my top pick!” and then swiftly changing it to, “No, this one takes the cake!
He emphasized that, contrary to any doubts, what he was saying wasn’t fabricated, but rather based on truth. To illustrate this point, the director spoke about a crucial scene in the film where Brightbill departs for migration – a sequence that holds personal significance for him.
Sanders commented, “The blend of that color and the angle of it were so artfully executed.” He went on to describe how he envisioned the characters positioned “in the soft, morning shadows” just as the sun begins to break through, and as they take off, they pass through the golden, warm sunlight, causing a change in their appearance as they ascend.
Chris Sanders mentioned that among all movie sequences, his most preferred one is the scene immediately following the previously discussed moment, which is known as “The Signal.” As per his disclosure, this scene unfolds when Roz, having successfully carried out her mission, appears afterward.
Sanders mentioned that she’s prepared to depart from the island as it prepares for its winter slumber. This transition in atmosphere and hues reminded him of his childhood in Colorado, when autumn followed summer. He found it challenging to put into words, but the artists managed to create something strikingly beautiful during this change.
Sanders continued by explaining how everything becomes still and serene in the scene, as the hues transition from the autumnal browns to a blend of greens and grays, just before the snow begins to gently fall. Moreover, he mentioned Chris Barrows’ music playing a significant role in enhancing this moment, stating that it “perfectly complements” the sequence. In conclusion, Sanders stated emphatically, “If there’s one part of the movie I would want to experience eternally, it would undeniably be that instant.
The Wild Robot releases in theatres across India on October 18.
