Sherry Coben, Writer and Creator of ‘Kate & Allie,’ Dies at 71

As a fan of the golden era of television, I am deeply saddened by the passing of Sherry Coben, a trailblazer whose contributions to the industry will be felt for generations to come. Her creation of “Kate & Allie,” a groundbreaking sitcom that tackled the complexities of single motherhood in the 80s, was more than just a show; it was a reflection of the times and a testament to her keen insight into the human condition.

Sherry Coben, a writer-producer best known as the creator of Kate & Allie, has died. She was 71.

On October 16, Coben passed away at her residence in New Milford, New Jersey, following a long struggle with cancer, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, according to her family.

For six seasons, from 1984 to 1989, the popular sitcom Kate & Allie aired on CBS. This show was filmed at the iconic Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City, which currently hosts The Late Show. The series, devised by Coben, featured Susan Saint James and Jane Curtin as divorced mothers who resided together and brought up their children under one roof.

Prior to creating the popular series “Kate & Allie“, Coben honed her craft as a writer for the ABC daytime soap opera “Ryan’s Hope“. Her professional journey began in the art department at KYW-TV in Philadelphia, where she created graphics, sets, illustrations, and animations for local programming and “The Mike Douglas Show“. Subsequently, she took on freelance artist roles for various television shows and magazines in New York City, such as NBC’s children’s program “Hot Hero Sandwich“.

In addition to his roles, Coben worked both as a scriptwriter and producer for the CBS TV show “Bailey Kipper’s Point of View“, and he was also the creator and writer for the online series “Little Women, Big Vehicles“.

Beyond my professional commitments, I frequently nurtured budding talents in writing, acting, and art. In my personal life, I am cherished by my beloved husband, film editor Patrick McMahon, as well as our daughters, Kaley McMahon and Jama McMahon.
