But none have ever touched me quite like Andrew Garfield‘s Peter Parker. His passion and dedication to the character were evident in every scene, especially the heart-wrenching demise of Gwen Stacy in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”.
Amongst Spider-Man enthusiasts, there’s always a lively debate when a group of more than five or six gather: Who is your preferred Spider-Man actor? Some appreciate their favorite’s portrayal of Peter Parker, while others are drawn to how their chosen one looks in the costume. Personally, I lean towards Andrew Garfield. I believe his dedication to the character, the source material, and the fans adds an extra dimension to his performance. If he had been given better scripts, he would undoubtedly be regarded as the most iconic Spider-Man, a fact that wouldn’t be up for debate.
In my view, among all Spider-Man movie scenes so far, Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of Gwen Stacy’s (Emma Stone) death in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” stands out as the most emotionally devastating. I understand the criticisms about the film’s overcrowded narrative, and I myself have delved into those issues extensively in a book. However, the powerful depiction of Gwen Stacy’s demise, which was a significant moment from the comics, cannot be overlooked. This scene, when revisited, is truly heart-wrenching and leaves an indelible mark.
Due to the heavy secrecy surrounding the events portrayed in the scene, I couldn’t bring up the topic during press days when I interviewed Andrew Garfield. However, when he visited TopMob’s ReelBlend podcast to talk about his latest romantic film, “We Live in Time,” co-starring Florence Pugh, I felt compelled to touch upon Gwen’s death and recollections of filming that particular scene. Fortunately, Garfield was kind enough to offer some thoughts on the impactful sequence.
As Garfield remembered it:
Reading through those lines, I realized that this scene carries significant importance for the character. I’m thrilled about our approach towards it. Initially, my reaction was, ‘This is going to be epic!’ But as the filming date approaches, I find myself contemplating ways to get hurt so I can skip it! The pressure is immense, and the stakes are high. Doubts creep in, such as, ‘I’m not cut out for this. They might need to recast because we’ve already filmed one movie!’ Such thoughts add to the anxiety, making me question my abilities.
At that time, it was highly unlikely that Andrew Garfield would be replaced as Spider-Man. He had already established himself as the main character in the franchise, taking over from Tobey Maguire after Sam Raimi concluded his trilogy. The release of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” marked the beginning of a new series of films, which included plans for a Sinister Six movie.
At that point, Garfield wasn’t fretting over the upcoming strategies for the Spider-Man series. Instead, his focus was on nailing this particular scene. When speaking with ReelBlend, he elaborated:
I requested Marc Webb to film the close-up scene initially so I could deliver my performance with maximum intensity from the start, capturing the raw, emotional reaction. Essentially, I asked him which shot would best convey the scene’s emotion, and he replied that it would be this one. Consequently, we decided to prepare and ensure that… Given the additional challenge that Emma Stone as Gwen needs a harness and must be suspended during the crucial moment, I needed to remove the harness but also unclip her safely, adding another technical layer to the scene.
