The way Imtiaz Ali envisioned her as the perfect Heer, someone who embodied the essence of ‘dil todne ki machine’, and casting her despite her being out of Ranbir’s league, adds an intriguing twist to Nargis’ story.
On her birthday, October 20th, we reflect back on the journey of Nargis Fakhri, who made her Bollywood debut alongside Ranbir Kapoor in the 2011 film, “Rockstar.” In this Kapoor-led musical romantic drama, she portrayed Heer Kaul. Interestingly, director Imtiaz Ali chose her for the role of a Rockstar actress precisely because she seemed to be out of Ranbir Kapoor’s usual league.
In a chat with Mid-Day, filmmaker Imtiaz Ali revealed the reasoning behind casting Nargis Fakhri in his film Rockstar. According to him, he wanted his character Heer to embody someone who could break hearts effortlessly, an ideal only few could strive for.
The acclaimed filmmaker remarked, “This woman, exuding such refined elegance, even surpassing Ranbir Kapoor’s caliber, caught my attention. I found her facial features, her physique, and her acting skills to be exceptional.
As a die-hard fan, let me share an intriguing tidbit: When I landed the role in Rockstar alongside Ranbir Kapoor, little did I know we were strangers beforehand! Last year, in an interview with Bollywood Hungama, I confessed my innocence about the industry. Back then, I was clueless about everyone involved. To be honest, I didn’t delve into any research because it wasn’t part of my plan.
Nargis continued that she came to India as a “regular person who wanted to try a new thing”.
In the movie Rockstar, Nargis Fakhri was matched with Ranbir Kapoor in a romantic role. While Ranbir portrayed the character of JJ (Janardhan Jakhar), a fellow from Delhi who attended Hindu College, Delhi University, and had dreams of becoming a musician. On the other hand, Nargis took on the part of Heer Kaul, an attractive girl hailing from St. Stephen’s College.
Additionally, the movie featured Aditi Rao Hydari, Piyush Mishra, and the esteemed actor Shammi Kapoor in significant parts of the storyline.
In terms of her career, Nargis Fakhri has been featured in films including Main Tera Hero, Housefull 3, Madras Cafe, Torbaaz, Amavas, and many more. She also made guest appearances in movies like Kick, Phata Poster Nikhla Hero, among others.
