What Is I Know What You Did Last Summer About?
1997’s movie “I Know What You Did Last Summer” tells the story of four high school friends who, while returning from the beach late at night, inadvertently strike a pedestrian on the road. In panic, they attempt to conceal the incident by disposing of the body in a river; however, the victim unexpectedly regains consciousness. Overwhelmed with fear, one friend decides to shove him back into the water, and the group conspires to never reveal what happened that fateful night.
A year has passed since we all went our separate ways, each grappling with the lingering guilt from that fateful incident. Then, I received an unsettling letter: “I know what you did the previous summer.” We reunited to unravel the enigma behind this message, some dismissing it as a harmless joke. However, our casual dismissal was shattered when one of us met an untimely end.
The game of cat-and-mouse persists as those involved in the tragic night’s events are terrorized by the realization that their secret is known and their tormentor is seeking revenge. With speculation swirling about whether this pursuer could be the miraculously alive or resurrected victim, the friends work to discover who they encountered on that fateful night.
Why I Know What You Did Last Summer Is Popular
The movie “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is packed with all the essential ingredients to create an exceptional slasher film, and when combined with teen horror, it becomes a formidable success. With roots in Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel of the same title, the narrative is loosely based on the urban legend known as “The Hook” or “The Hookman.” This supposed killer is equipped with a hook for a hand and is rumored to have attacked a couple in their car one fateful night. The film also took inspiration from earlier works such as 1980’s “Prom Night” and the 1982 release, “The House on Sorority Row.
The movie raked in a massive $125.3 million at the box office on a minimal budget of $17 million, earning the top spot in the U.S. for three consecutive weeks. This was surprising given its mediocre critical reception, with Rotten Tomatoes critics rating it at 46% and audience score at 41%. Interestingly, due to its box office success, the film was later parodied in the satirical movie “Scary Movie” (2000), which made fun of not only this movie but also other films and common horror tropes in general. This was a follow-up to the box office hit “I Know What You Did Last Summer.
The movie continued to be successful, and its 1998 sequel titled “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer,” which brought back Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., and Mekhi Phifer, was followed by another direct-to-video standalone sequel in 2006 called “I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer.” This movie received negative reviews and featured a completely new cast.
In 2021, Amazon’s Prime Video brought to life a TV series based on a unique idea, consisting of eight episodes for one season. Much like its predecessor, it introduced an entirely fresh acting ensemble. But fear not, the saga isn’t over yet! Sony Pictures is currently working on a direct sequel to the original storyline, with plans to release the first two films out of an undetermined number in the summer of 2025. Although several projects linked to it may not have had the best reception, I Know What You Did Last Summer continues to hold an esteemed position in horror film history. This movie played a significant role in rekindling enthusiasm for the slasher genre and offered a contemporary twist on a concept that had been around for quite some time. Among them are Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar (who played Helen Shivers), Ryan Philippe (as Barry Cox), Freddie Prinze Jr. (Ray Bronson), Johnny Galecki (Max Neurick), Bridgette Wilson (Elsa Shivers), Anne Heche (Melissa “Missy” Egan, who tragically passed away), Muse Watson (Ben Willis/The Fisherman), and Stuart Greer (Officer).

After his initial appearances, Prinze Jr. graced the screen in films such as “She’s All That” and “Scooby-Doo,” and recurred on shows like “Boston Legal” and “24.” He later spearheaded a brief sitcom called “Freddie” and starred in the one-season revival of “Punky Brewster” on Peacock. His next project will be the upcoming fourth movie of “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” A decade following this release, Galecki landed a breakthrough role as Leonard Hofstadter on the sitcom The Big Bang Theory. This show ran for 12 seasons until 2019 and at one point, the cast earned a place among the highest-paid TV actors due to their collective success.

Wilson, famously known for her part in the movie “Billy Madison”, took on minor roles following its success, and later starred in the off-Broadway adaptation of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”. However, since 2008, she has primarily stayed away from on-screen acting. Known for recurring roles in shows like “NCIS” and “Prison Break”, Watson reprised his character for the sequel film. Unfortunately, Ellen DeGeneres died in 2022. After this movie, she took on numerous roles in films and TV shows such as My Friend Dahmer, Everwood, Men in Trees, and The Brave. Two years before her passing, she participated in the reality competition series Dancing with the Stars.
A fresh installment of the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” film is underway, and certain actors will once again list this title on their portfolios. Jennifer Love Hewitt shared with ET Online her eagerness to revisit her character, Julie James, but also her apprehension due to the passage of 26 years.
