As a long-time Star Trek enthusiast who’s seen more episodes than I can count on one hand (and a few on my feet too), I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. The idea of a series dedicated entirely to Starfleet is something that has been long overdue, and the fact that it’s being produced now is a testament to the enduring power of this franchise.
Despite not having aired yet, there’s already a high level of anticipation for the upcoming Star Trek spin-off, titled “Starfleet Academy”. This fresh installment in the franchise is set in the 32nd Century and focuses on a new group of Starfleet cadets undergoing their training. The series will introduce a novel cast, including actors like Holly Hunter and Paul Giamatti, as well as featuring several familiar faces from previous Star Trek series. Among these are Mary Wiseman and Tig Notaro reprising their roles as Sylvia Tilly and Jett Reno from “Star Trek: Discovery”, and Robert Picardo playing the Doctor from both “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” and “Star Trek: Prodigy”.
Based on reports from Variety, it appears that the series “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” has already been given the green light for a second season before its initial premiere. This news was officially announced during New York Comic-Con by Alex Kurtzman, who serves as executive producer, co-showrunner, and director of “Starfleet Academy”. Furthermore, it’s been confirmed that Tatiana Maslany, known for her roles in “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” and “Orphan Black”, will be making a recurring appearance in the first season of “Starfleet Academy”, although specific details about her character are still under wraps.
Filming is currently taking place at Starfleet Academy, though a release date hasn’t been announced yet, it’s expected to be after 2025 with a strong possibility of 2026. Though the concept of a series set at Starfleet Academy has been considered and fans caught a brief peek into Kirk’s time there in the Kelvin Timeline of the 2009 Star Trek, this will be the first Star Trek series that primarily focuses on Starfleet Academy as its main location, rather than a command ship or space station.
Star Trek’s Future
As a die-hard Star Trek fan, I’ve noticed a gaping hole in the Paramount+ schedule, especially since 2023 when Star Trek: Picard wrapped up its epic journey. The same year also saw Star Trek: Prodigy getting canceled and then finding a new home on Netflix, where it’s currently airing Season 2. Star Trek: Discovery concluded earlier in 2024, leaving only Star Trek: Lower Decks to keep us company, which will be ending its run starting October 24, 2024, and wrapping up on December 19, 2024. After the final episode of Lower Deck, only Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will remain on Paramount+, with Season 3 expected to debut sometime in 2025.
It’s clear that we’re moving closer to seeing more of Star Trek, as Justin Simien and Lower Decks star Tawny Newsome are working on a new live-action comedy series for the franchise. This development has us excited about the future, especially with big names like Holly Hunter, Paul Giamatti, and Tatiana Maslany joining the cast. The anticipation surrounding Starfleet Academy is palpable, hinting at something truly special in store.
