‘Watson,’ CBS’ Modern-Day Twist on Sherlock Holmes, Opens MIPCOM

As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of detective games, from Sherlock Holmes to L.A. Noire, I must admit that the prospect of Morris Chestnut’s new series, Watson, has me intrigued and excited. The twist on the classic detective tales, focusing instead on medical mysteries, promises a fresh take on a beloved story while still maintaining respect for its roots.

The high-octane medical series starring Morris Chestnut, titled “Watson,” which draws inspiration from the timeless tales of detective Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, debuted at the MIPCOM in Cannes, France on Sunday. This was hosted by CBS Studios.

Chestnut expressed great enthusiasm for his new show, stating that it offers a unique and innovative perspective on its mythology.

The fresh drama, titled “Dr. Watson’s Perspective,” made its global debut at MIPCOM, opening the international television market, and is set apart by its focus on medical aspects rather than criminal investigations, as pointed out by Chestnut. However, it remains faithful to the original Sherlock Holmes tales in its overall respect for the stories.

As a character named Chestnut, I step into the shoes of Watson, Holmes’ trusted companion in this fresh take on the storyline. In the narrative, my character picks up where he left off, rekindling his medical profession as the leader of a specialized clinic focused on treating uncommon illnesses. Tragically, my friend and partner has passed away. However, it doesn’t take long for me to realize that my past isn’t quite ready to let go either.

In an unusual take on traditional Sherlock portrayals, this version of Watson specializes in solving medical conundrums rather than detective narratives. One physician voices his disagreement in the premiere, stating, “We are healers, not investigators.

In the first installment, skillfully orchestrated by director Larry Teng, Watson encounters a heart-wrenching predicament involving a rare and fatal sleep disorder called familial insomnia. This situation is further complicated as he strives to aid a pregnant woman who is suffering from neurodegenerative prion disease, hoping she can survive till the delivery of her baby.

Chestnut explained that the heart of this series lies in its procedural structure, with a key case driving each episode. As the story unfolds, the characters undergo growth and transformation throughout the show’s progression.

As a gamer, I’d put it this way: “I, being part of the gaming community, am excited to share that Craig Sweeny, known for his work on ‘Elementary’ and ‘Star Trek: Section 31’, penned the initial episode. He’s joining forces with Chestnut, Sallie Patrick, Teng, Shäron Moalem, Brian Morewitz, and Aaron Kaplan under Kapital Entertainment to executive produce this project.

The CBS Studios-produced series is set to debut on Jan 26 on CBS.

As a passionate fan, I’m thrilled to share that I was part of the global launch unveiling of “Watson” at MIPCOM, an exciting event where CBS Studios announced its international debut. Paramount Global, the network’s parent company, has high hopes for this high-end procedural series, believing that it can thrive on both traditional broadcasting and streaming platforms, catering to the growing demand in the market.

MIPCOM, the world’s leading international television market, runs Oct. 21-24.
