Josh Brolin Reveals He Had an Intimacy Coordinator with an Ape in Brothers

As a cinephile who has seen his fair share of comedic acts, I must admit that Brolin & Dinklage have left an indelible mark with their hilarious performances in Brothers. Their on-screen chemistry is so palpable, it’s as if they’ve been bickering brothers for a lifetime! The supporting cast, including the legendary M. Emmet Walsh, Brendan Fraser, and Marisa Tomei, only serve to elevate this comedic masterpiece.

As a film aficionado, I must confess, I never imagined the comedic duo we’d witness would be Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage. But after watching their performance in the new Prime Video movie titled “Brothers”, I find myself yearning for more laughter-filled movies starring these two. Their chemistry as bickering siblings in this star-studded production is simply gold, with additional comedic gems from Brendan Fraser, Marisa Tomei, Glenn Close, and the late, legendary M. Emmet Walsh. The pair’s ease together in a double-act is so palpable that it shines through even in interviews with them.

In a lively exchange of ideas, the two performers openly talked about their upcoming outrageous comedy, filled with scenarios that could make certain actors uneasy, ranging from suggestive situations to unexpectedly close encounters with animals, even involving partial nudity. Curiously, we inquired if they experienced any awkward moments while filming their production.

Peter Dinklage: For nearly three days, Josh found himself outside in heavy rain, clad only in his snug fitting underpants.

Josh Brolin: Which was difficult for Peter. It wasn’t difficult for me.

Peter Dinklage: I wasn’t saying Josh. It was fine for Josh. Josh seemed fine… We got very close.

Regarding the term “getting very close”, we wondered if an intimacy consultant was utilized during the filming of “Brothers“. The actors shared their thoughts on this matter.

Peter Dinklage: Didn’t you need one for Samuel?

Josh Brolin: I think we did.

Peter Dinklage: It’s quite amusing, but this is the peculiar aspect of filmmaking. For the scene involving Josh and the ape, they actually prepared a separate prop.

Josh Brolin: In case something was uncomfortable for the monkey, not for me.

Peter Dinklage: Actually, no one was looking out for you specifically. However, humorously speaking, the actress Devyn Dalton, known for her motion capture work, portrayed Samuel in the series. Yet, it’s quite amusing to consider that an intimacy coordinator would be required for this role.

Josh Brolin: However, the fact that it was her was the reason why we required an intimacy coordinator. Yet, it was oddly entertaining to observe her, while at the same time it made me feel uneasy.

Dinklage and Brolin have been associated with the movie “Brothers” since its conception, about five years ago. Although their on-screen relationship evolved, they remained dedicated to this project, a commitment that ultimately deepened their bond, which is evident in the film. As Dinklage put it, “It’s a Hollywood story – a friendship blossomed during the scripting process.” Brolin added:

When we first teamed up, we’d often chat about an idea, then we’d go ahead and share it with various individuals. As we presented this concept, it evolved from pitch to pitch. At times, I took the lead, while on other occasions he did. Eventually, we discovered our unique role in the process.

Dinklage remarked, “The fortunate aspect is no one desired it, thus our acquisition process was prolonged. This gave us ample time to become familiar with one another.” Take a look at the fruitful outcome of this collaboration in ‘Brothers’, now streaming on Prime Video here.
