As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast with a soft spot for horror flicks, I must say that Naomi Scott‘s performance in Smile 2 left me absolutely astounded. The dedication she displayed in her role as Skye Riley was nothing short of extraordinary.
Acting in any movie generally involves physical exertion, but when it comes to horror films, there are specific expectations such as strained vocal cords from a day of shouting or intense cardio workouts while running away from monsters or killers. In contrast to the norm, Smile 2 presented a distinct challenge for lead actress Naomi Scott. Her character frequently drank large amounts of water, and she fully embraced this aspect of her role.

‘Sky’s The Limit’: Smile 2 Director On The Horror Franchise’s Future
In the movie “Smile 2”, Naomi Scott’s character, Skye Riley, shares that drinking water is an integral part of her journey towards sobriety. Throughout the film, she engages in numerous therapeutic water-drinking scenes. However, these scenes were not all filmed in a single take, leading to some intense gulping. Notably challenging was a continuous take scene early in the movie where Skye is alone in her apartment at night and the curse begins to torment her. As Scott explained, this particular sequence was particularly difficult because of the repeated water-drinking actions required during the uninterrupted filming.
Among the things I’m particularly proud of is that extended scene where the glass shatters, as it required a great deal of effort and persistence. For instance, during filming, I had to drink an entire bottle of water at the start of each take, and we ended up doing this five times because the setup between takes was so lengthy. Interestingly, we only completed the scene twice due to the time-consuming process of resetting the shattered glass, which took around an hour for each attempt.
The scenario in question starts with Skye initially sipping water from a glass bottle, then placing it on her kitchen counter before accidentally knocking it over and breaking it on the floor. However, the takes weren’t shot consecutively as adjustments to cameras, lighting, and props were necessary each time Parker Finn yelled “cut.” Yet, in every take, Naomi Scott was seen taking a sip of Voss water.
During that take with Parker [Finn], if it wasn’t the right one, he’d shout “cut”, but I had to continue regardless. So, in a span of however many hours, I downed five of them. It was just terrible! I was burping constantly, bloated, and thought, ‘Who on earth thought this would be challenging?’
In the movie “Smile 2”, Naomi Scott’s lead role didn’t just involve being haunted by a grinning demon or showcasing her acting abilities, but it also demanded her to convincingly embody a globally recognized pop star. This meant she had to display her musical and dancing talents extensively. Looking back, one can easily add “drinking copious amounts of water” to her list of “Obstacles Encountered” during the film’s production.
Essentially, director Parker Finn provided an escape route for her. She shared with me that he suggested finding a solution, but as a dedicated professional, she chose to persevere instead.
Parker said something like, “You don’t have to continue drinking, do you?” To which I replied, “No.” At this point, it’s crucial that things are honest. He was essentially saying, “If you can’t, I get it,” and I responded, “I can and I will!” I was well-hydrated, let’s just say I’ve been urinating frequently. I’m not sure why I said ‘a lot of piss.’ That doesn’t sound very pleasant. (laughs)
Additionally featuring Kyle Gallner, Lukas Gage, Ray Nicholson, Dylan Gelula, Rosemarie DeWitt, Raúl Castillo, and Peter Jacobson, “Smile 2” is currently screening in cinemas nationwide.
