As a dedicated fan who has weathered countless storms with NCIS over the years, I can confidently say that the latest episode, “Foreign Bodies,” was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride! The return of Lena Paulsen, the German intelligence agent with a mysterious past and a soft spot for Director Vance, added an exciting new dimension to the story.
Warning: SPOILERS for the NCIS episode “Foreign Bodies” are ahead!
In the NCIS Season 20 episode “Guardian,” we were introduced to Lena Paulsen, an agent from the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), or Federal Intelligence Service, who was casually involved with NCIS Director Leon Vance. Two years later, in the recently aired “Foreign Bodies” episode of NCIS (2024 TV schedule), Lena, portrayed by Marem Hassler, made her return. Initially, there were some strains between them, but by the end of this Season 22 episode, hints were dropped that we can expect to see more of her in the coming episodes, which is exciting for fans like me who believe Vance could benefit from positive events in his life.
This week’s NCIS episode centered around a group of Venezuelan navy officials, headed by Admiral Carlos Mendoza, visiting Washington D.C. for discussions with the U.S. Navy to establish a joint task force aimed at combating piracy in the Caribbean. Vance was spearheading these negotiations on behalf of the U.S., but events took an unexpected turn when Diego Barreto, one of Vance’s undercover agents within the Venezuelan diplomats’ security team, met an untimely end in his office.
Later, it was discovered that poison led to Barreto’s fall and head injury, and before he passed away, he whispered to Vance that someone was attempting to undermine the negotiations. As a result, Alden Parker, Timothy McGee, Nick Torres, Jimmy Palmer, and Jessica Knight (who had just returned to the team) were tasked with covertly removing Barreto’s body from the scene without being detected and returning it to his hotel room to maintain his cover.

In simpler terms, for the upcoming season 22 of NCIS, a significant new antagonist has been introduced. Actress Katrina Law hinted at what we might anticipate from this menacing adversary that has reportedly given McGee quite an unsettling jolt.
Rocky Carroll from NCIS recounts an amusing prank that Mark Harmon played on him during one of his early scenes on the CBS series. In one of the earliest episodes, Mark Harmon pulled off a funny trick on Rocky Carroll while they were working together on NCIS for CBS.
This initiated a chain of significant incidents that exposed Mendoza as Barreto’s murderer (in retaliation for his affair with Barreto’s wife) and a journalist-turned-Hezbollah operative named Robin Cale as the one trying to derail the negotiations. Amidst this tumult, Lena Paulsen reappeared in Vance’s life. Having left German intelligence to work independently, Lena was hired by a client to represent NATO at the talks. It was later discovered that Lena was conducting her own covert operation for the BND with Fernando Vega, an undercover agent within Mendoza’s group. Later, Robin kidnapped Lena in an attempt to cancel the negotiations, but she was rescued just in time.
Despite a short spell of friction between Vance and Lena concerning their clandestine activities, they generally got along quite well. In truth, while Vance was at Parker’s apartment, he reminisced about the time when he was wounded (an event that occurred in the 1,000th episode of the NCIS series). This incident led him to ponder over how he wanted to utilize his remaining time and who he wished to spend it with. Meanwhile, Parker briefly contemplated his own brush with death, where he hallucinated seeing a girl from his past whom he couldn’t identify. However, this peculiar encounter remains unsolved and will be explored further in the 22nd season of NCIS.
Towards the finale of “Foreign Bodies”, Vance confided in Lena that he wished to formalize their romantic relationship and spend more time with her, considering she now resides in a New York apartment. Interestingly, Lena seemed to share this sentiment, as she handed Vance a key to her new residence. While it’s not certain if we’ll see Lena regularly on NCIS, given the episode’s conclusion, I wouldn’t be shocked if she appears more frequently. This development is certainly welcome for Vance, who has experienced much hardship, such as multiple near-death experiences and the loss of his wife Jackie. More moments with Lena can only bring him more joy, and this definitely falls into that category.
