MCU Star Zoe Saldaa Reveals Why She Wants to Reshoot the Avengers Movies

As a long-time admirer of Zoe Saldaña’s captivating performances, I can truly empathize with her feelings about her experience working with the Russo Brothers on the Avengers movies. It is always enlightening to hear an artist reflect on their journey and express desires for growth in their craft.

In a recent interview with Variety, Zoe Saldaña, famous for her role as the ruthless assassin Gamora in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Guardians of the Galaxy series, revealed her wish to revisit and reshoot her character’s journey in the Avengers movies. While such time-travel scenarios are currently confined to Disney+ shows, it’s intriguing to learn that Saldaña felt somewhat adrift in her arc under the Russo Brothers’ direction during the Avengers films. During the interview, a game of “Know Your Lines,” she discussed some of her most memorable lines from various movies, offering insights and personal reflections, particularly about her work on the Avengers movies by the Russo Brothers.

I often find myself thinking about redoing the scenes where Gamora was featured in the ‘Avengers’ films, as I didn’t fully grasp what the Russo Brothers intended at the time. They’re exceptional directors and I feel incredibly fortunate to have worked with them. Portraying Gamora in their movies is something I’ll always be grateful for. If given another chance, I would strive harder because it was such a precious opportunity to portray a daughter struggling with her father, deciding between reconciliation or departure. It’s disappointing that I didn’t fully appreciate this opportunity back then.

In 2014, Zoe Saldaña debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Gamora, a character introduced in the initial Guardians of the Galaxy series, who is the adopted daughter of the infamous Titan, also known as Thanos. Subsequently, she appeared in two Avengers films, Infinity War and Endgame, where her intricate relationships with Thanos and Nebula, her sibling, became a significant focus.

Zoe Saldaña Believes James Gunn’s Movies, In Comparison, Were ‘Deep’

Compared to her role in the Avengers series, Zoe Saldana feels that Gamora’s journey in the James Gunn movies, particularly those in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, was far more complex and emotionally impactful. From a ruthless assassin, Gamora evolved into a caring sister and partner. It required time for her to reveal her painful past and allow Peter Quill, as well as other characters, to truly connect with her. Saldana attributes this depth to Gunn’s exploration of the character’s intricate backstory, expressing her satisfaction and pride in being a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As a cinephile who’s always excited about Marvel productions, I can’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment being involved in movies that resonate with the youth. It’s not every day you get to contribute to films that, despite being part of the Marvel universe, still manage to be profound and impactful for younger viewers.

What [James Gunn] was doing was something really special. We were supposed to be these rejects that came with childhood traumas and disabilities and mental issues. He gave these characters space to be loved and to find a family within their friendship. It was a really important film now that I look back on it.”

Despite now cherishing her time working on Guardians’ movies, Zoe Saldaña has made it clear that she would not want to return to Marvel following Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, even if the opportunity arose. She feels that Gamora’s chapter was closed beautifully, and it is not time for her to take up new challenges and move on to future projects. However, she does think the franchise would be foolish not to bring the titular team back with different characters and actors.
