Tony Hale Gushes Over the Inside Out Miniseries Dream Productions

As a film enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the captivating worlds of Pixar and Disney, I eagerly await the arrival of “Dream Productions” on Disney+ this December. Tony Hale’s portrayal of Fear in the Inside Out franchise has been nothing short of a masterclass in voice acting, and I can’t help but feel a sense of kinship with him as I too am constantly eager to see what creative genius Pixar will unleash next.

Tony Hale has shown a knack for comedy derived from personal struggles in various roles such as Buster on Arrested Development and Gary in Veep. This year, he demonstrated this skill in the most tangible manner possible by voicing Fear in the second installment of Inside Out 2, a movie that eventually became the highest-grossing animated film ever made and is expected to claim the title for the top-grossing film of 2024 as well. Although the year of Inside Out isn’t completely done, a special limited series spin-off from the films titled Dream Productions is set to premiere on Disney+ before 2025. Hale expressed his enthusiasm about this project with us:

I haven’t watched it yet, but I’m really looking forward to doing so. It’s set for release in December, and I eagerly await that date. Frankly, Pixar is such a creative powerhouse to me, and getting the chance to work on Inside Out 2 still feels surreal. I can’t help but wonder, ‘Am I really associated with this project?’ So, my excitement for what they will create next remains undiminished. Even the subtle sarcasm they introduced in the original film, which was a chasm that echoed your screams, had me enthralled. I can hardly wait to see their innovative ideas in these upcoming episodes – I’m absolutely thrilled!

In the animated film “Inside Out,” Bill Hader originally played the character Fear, but later on, this role was assumed by Hale after Hader and Mindy Kaling stepped down from the sequel, “Inside Out 2.” The reason for their departure seems to be due to wage disparities. It’s reported that they were offered a salary of $100,000 with no extra benefits, while Amy Poehler was earning $5 million (plus additional fees and bonuses), as per Puck’s sources.

What Is Dream Productions Really About?

The title “Dream Productions” signifies a nod to the initial movie’s scene depicting dream creation within a Hollywood-like studio system, as well as a track from Michael Giacchino’s original score. This four-episode series centers around Paula Persimmon, portrayed by Paula Pell, and her collaboration with Xeni, played by Richard Ayoade, to launch the next sensational teenage fantasy. “Dream Productions” is the brainchild of screenwriter Mike Jones, who jointly penned “Soul” and “Luca” for Pixar.

The full synopsis reads as follows:

Occurring during the gap between the stories of Inside Out and its sequel, a brand new series produced by Dream Productions unfolds. This series takes place within the studio located inside Riley’s mind, a magical place where dreams truly materialize every night on schedule and within budget. As Riley grows older, her memories require additional processing, so Joy and the rest of the Core Emotions send them to this dream-making factory known as Dream Productions.

Renowned director Paula Persimmon, voiced by Paula Pell, grapples with a personal challenge: Collaborating with Xeni, portrayed by Richard Ayoade, an arrogant up-and-coming director aiming to transition from daydreams to nightmares in the grand scheme of things. This star-studded cast includes Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Ally Maki, Kensington Tallman, Liza Lapira, Tony Hale, Lewis Black and Phyllis Smith. The side-splitting series, reminiscent of mockumentaries, is penned and helmed by Mike Jones, with Jaclyn Simon serving as the producer.

Dream Productions comes to Disney+ on Dec. 11, 2024.
