As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for 80s nostalgia and a deep appreciation for heavy metal music, I must say that Peacock’s Hysteria! has struck all the right chords. The series’ immersion into the era’s music culture is nothing short of impressive, and it’s fascinating to see how they managed to make the three leads learn to play guitar, bass, and drums for their on-screen performances as Dethkrunch.
Music plays a significant role in the series “Hysteria!” on Peacock (you can stream all eight episodes here). In essence, it could be asserted that music, specifically heavy metal, serves as the primary driving force behind the narrative, set amidst the turmoil of the Satanic Panic.
To effectively convey the significance of music within the storyline, it became essential for the three principal actors – Emjay Anthony as Dylan Campbell, Chiara Aurelia playing Jordy, and Kezii Curtis in the role of Spud – to acquire skills on guitar, bass, and drums, so they could convincingly depict their characters as members of the fictitious band named Dethkrunch.
Besides the on-stage acts by the self-promoting teenagers, Hysteria! incorporates compositions by Tyler Bates and various rock anthems from renowned bands such as Queen, Alice Cooper, Iron Maiden, White Lion, and Thin Lizzy. The result is a fantastic 80’s experience, where the music enhances the show’s authentic ’80s ambiance.

How to listen to Hysteria! soundtrack?
The entire soundtrack for the movie “Hysteria!” – consisting of 24 tracks in total – is now available for streaming on various music platforms, courtesy of Lakeshore Records. An interesting tidbit: Dave Lombardo, drummer from Slayer, contributes to several tracks.
Who composed the Hysteria! soundtrack?
The instrumental music for “Hysteria!” was crafted by Tyler Bates, a seasoned professional in Hollywood who has an impressive portfolio that encompasses projects such as “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw,” “The Devil’s Rejects,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “John Wick,” “Watchmen,” “X,” “MaXXXine,” “Pearl,” “Conan the Barbarian,” “Deadpool 2,” “The Punisher,” “Dawn of the Dead,” “God of War: Ascension,” “Slither,” and numerous others.
In a 2023 interview with The Creative Independent, Bates shared that he watched “Dawn of the Dead” and “The Devil’s Rejects” back-to-back, which led him to compose a significant amount of dark ambient noise scores. However, he has a deep affection for creating orchestral music and melodic pieces as well. Occasionally, one might find themselves working on something other than what they truly desire, but that’s why Bates enjoys exploring various creative avenues.
During the series, the versions of Dethkrunch songs sung by Jordy, portrayed by Chiara Aurelia, were actually penned and produced by Eric Vasquez from the LA-based hardcore band One Circle.

Is Dethkrunch a real heavy metal band?
As a devoted enthusiast, let me clarify that Dethkrunch isn’t a real band, but rather a brilliant creation for the captivating series, Hysteria! Drawing inspiration from the heavy metal legends of the era such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Black Sabbath, this fictional group truly embodies the spirit of those legendary acts. The soundtrack includes three original Dethkrunch compositions: “The Rapture,” “Watchers of Death,” and “Light Up The Night,” each one adding to the show’s electrifying atmosphere.
