Paul Mescal Reveals The Most ‘Brutal’ Element Of Shooting Gladiator II's Colosseum Scenes, And It's Not What I Excepted

As a die-hard fan of Paul Mescal and his meteoric rise in Hollywood, I must say that reading about his experiences during the filming of “Gladiator II” has only deepened my admiration for him. The man is not just an actor; he’s a warrior.

In the tradition set by Russell Crowe, it’s now Paul Mescal’s time to fight in the Colosseum for “Gladiator II”. The Irish actor aims to demonstrate his worthiness as a rising star worthy of wearing Ancient Rome’s armor. Each role he takes on seems to turn into gold, with his resume boasting titles like “Normal People”, “Aftersun”, and “All of Us Strangers”. Although filming battle scenes for the much-anticipated sequel may present its own difficulties, Mescal shares candidly about the most challenging aspect of shooting “Gladiator II”‘s Colosseum sequences, and you might be surprised to learn what it is.

In the official trailer for Ridley Scott’s sequel, Paul Mescal’s fight with a rhinoceros had us excited. But Entertainment Weekly revealed an interesting twist: it wasn’t the 3D-printed, remote-controlled rhino that made this action scene difficult for the Emmy-nominated actor. Instead, it was battling against the harsh conditions of Mother Nature – specifically, a very hot sandy floor that proved challenging for him to navigate. As Paul Mescal himself put it, “It wasn’t just about fighting the rhino; I had to battle the elements as well.

For approximately two to three days, we filmed that scene, yet the intensity of the heat was unbearable. My Irish ancestry struggled to adapt to Ridley’s relentless shooting schedule, which spanned from dawn till dusk, focusing on the hottest parts of the day. The struggle was fierce, as I am accustomed to athletic activities and enjoy physical exertion. However, the set transformed into a furnace, making me feel nauseous, irritable, and exhausted. Between takes, I found myself constantly dousing my back with ice to cool down.

It wouldn’t be enjoyable to film arena scenes under the scorching sun, let alone when the ground feels like it’s on fire. Yet, Paul Mescal’s character Lucius is expected to give his best performance, competing fiercely against Pedro Pascal’s Marcus as retaliation for intruding on his home. Already, the training for Lucius, son of Maximus, is demanding. Adding to this challenge by performing those sequences under the blistering sun only increases the physical and mental exertion required, transforming the actor into a true gladiator.

Paul Mescal dedicated tireless effort in portraying Lucius Verus. Transforming his physique for “Gladiator II” left his co-star Joseph Quinn admitting he wouldn’t have a chance competing with Mescal at the gym due to Mescal’s relentless dedication to embodying the character. The actor from “The Lost Daughter” didn’t conceal his impressive muscles in training videos, showcasing him lifting weights with an effortless grace.

Mescal emphasized that it’s crucial to appear as a formidable Roman warrior, one you wouldn’t want to confront, yet he warned against the training trap of resembling a model from an ancient Roman fashion magazine instead. Putting it another way, the acclaimed actor certainly embodies the physique of a war-ready colossus compared to posing for a modern day version of Rome’s men’s fashion magazine.

Given Paul Mescal’s filmography primarily involves smaller projects, it’s likely that his role in Gladiator II will be his most prominent film yet, potentially increasing his fame (although perhaps unwantedly). The opportunity to build upon the foundation laid by Ridley Scott in 2000 comes with its own set of challenges. Thankfully, Mescal received sound guidance from his director, who told him, “Your nerves are no use to me,” which gave him confidence knowing he’s on the right track.

Despite feeling nervous due to working alongside a renowned actor like Denzel Washington, Paul Mescal learned to push past that and focus on doing his job well to keep the production going. As a BAFTA nominee preparing for an upcoming major movie project, I’m sure he will apply these new skills to many future roles as his acting career continues to soar even higher.

In the challenging production of “Gladiator II,” Paul Mescal found himself competing against Pedro Pascal, a harsh environment, and scorching temperatures. However, much like his character Lucius who had to conquer formidable obstacles to uphold his father’s legacy, Mescal demonstrated remarkable determination to assist Ridley Scott in bringing this epic sequel to life. Brace yourselves as the Irish actor prepares for an intense showdown in the Colosseum when the movie hits theaters on November 22, 2024.
