As a long-time fan of both superhero movies and the Oscars, I must admit that the prospect of superhero films taking home major awards has always been a bit of a pipe dream for me. Yet, the upcoming film “Deadpool & Wolverine” has piqued my interest as it seems to have a legitimate shot at snagging some craft-related awards.
The duo of Deadpool and Wolverine remains deeply cherished by Marvel enthusiasts. Following its title as the highest-grossing R-rated film ever, Deadpool and Wolverine cemented their financial superiority by recording the highest first-week domestic digital sales for an R-rated movie, surpassing John Wick: Chapter 4 starring Keanu Reeves. As the film maintains its grip on superhero discourse — with some hailing it as the MCU’s savior while others view it merely as an Easter egg spectacle — Marvel Studios are keen on keeping Deadpool and Wolverine at the pinnacle of popularity.
In September, it was revealed that Marvel Studios plans to enter the films featuring Deadpool and Wolverine for consideration at the Academy Awards. Fervent Marvel fans on Reddit, who might spend too much time debating online, would all concur that the film deserves every award due to their belief that superhero movies are often overlooked in critical circles. However, it’s questionable whether this movie stands a real chance of taking home any awards.
Deadpool & Wolverine’s Oscar’s Odds Are Slim for the Big Categories
When you think about the Oscars, you think of the awards for Best Actor/Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Director, and, most importantly, Best Picture. Those are the key categories that excite casual audiences and which Marvel fans always believe the next release should be a contender for. When fans heard that Deadpool & Wolverine would compete in next year’s awards, those four categories came to mind. But, sorry to burst that bubble, as the film has almost no chance against the big hitters.
Regardless of the slim possibility of Deadpool and Wolverine winning in their respective categories, it doesn’t diminish the movie’s merit. In examining the probable nominees, it seems challenging to envision a scenario where the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s R-rated blockbuster triumphs over contenders like Dune: Part Two, Sean Baker’s Anora, Conclave, and upcoming films such as Blitz, A Complete Unknown, and Gladiator II in the Best Picture category.
As a die-hard fan here, I have to admit that Deadpool and Wolverine might only stand a tiny chance in the Best Supporting Actor category. While Ryan Reynolds brings his signature charm throughout the movie, Hugh Jackman delivers an intense performance as a Wolverine from another dimension. It’s definitely touching, even for a Deadpool film. However, I think it’s unlikely to contend with the Best Supporting Actor title this year. The early predictions are pointing towards Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain), Stanley Tucci (Conclave), John Turturro (The Room Next Door), and Guy Pearce (The Brutalist) as the frontrunners in that category. Given that Hugh Jackman didn’t even get a nomination for Logan, I doubt his smaller role in Deadpool & Wolverine will snatch the golden statuette.
Deadpool & Wolverine Could Win the Craft Categories
As a movie enthusiast who’s always eager for the next superhero blockbuster, I can’t help but notice that these action-packed films haven’t had much luck at the Oscars. Only a handful have managed to make a mark, such as The Dark Knight, Joker, Black Panther, and if we stretch it a bit, Big Hero 6. But let’s not despair! While Deadpool and Wolverine might not stand a chance against the heavyweights in the main categories, they could very well clean up in the “craft” departments.
Historically, superhero movies have a strong likelihood of excelling in three key areas: outstanding Visual Effects, impressive Hair and Makeup designs, and striking Costume Design. Deadpool and Wolverine have a solid chance at earning nominations for Best VFX and Best Costume Design, but achieving recognition in the Hair and Makeup category might be challenging due to most of its characters wearing masks. However, they’ll still face stiff competition in each category. For instance, Dune: Part Two took viewers to Arrakis, showcasing realistic sandworms and ornithopters, while Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes transformed 80% of its cast into lifelike apes! Additionally, this category may see some unexpected contenders such as Alien: Romulus, Mufasa: The Lion King, Twisters, Nosferatu, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
It appears that Deadpool & Wolverine might not have swept the Best Costume Design category at next year’s awards, as there are many strong contenders vying for that title after an impressive year in filmmaking. Among these potential nominees, Dune: Part Two is expected to be included once more, along with Gladiator II. Additionally, Wicked, Blitz, Emilia Perez, Nosferatu, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Sing Sing, and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga are all anticipated to have a good chance of winning the award, according to film analysts.
Regrettably, Wolverine’s yellow suit, famous for making grown men tear up, didn’t manage to outshine the other nominees in securing the award. However, this doesn’t rule out the possibility of Deadpool and Wolverine winning an Oscar at the 2025 awards. The strong competition in 2024 film industry indicates that it was a remarkable year for movies. Even though Deadpool and Wolverine have successfully emptied our wallets, it doesn’t automatically ensure they will win an Oscar. These films are available for purchase on Prime Video, Apple TV, and Google Play.
