As a child of the ’80s, I can vividly remember the laughter and warmth that filled our living room every Tuesday night when “Who’s the Boss” graced our television screens. Judith Light’s character, Angela Bower, was more than just a sitcom mom; she was a trailblazer, breaking barriers and setting an example for countless women and girls across America.
Approximately four decades ago, on September 20, 1984, the television series “Who’s the Boss” premiered, bringing audiences into the world of Tony Danza, Alyssa Milano, and Judith Light’s charming characters for eight seasons. Though it had a distinctly ’80s quirky feel, the show was surprisingly forward-thinking when it came to addressing class and gender matters, resembling a post-’70s version of the “Mary Tyler Moore” series. This is one reason Alyssa Milano has been working on reviving “Who’s the Boss” for several years now. She recently shared with Entertainment Tonight that she is still trying to find a suitable platform for the reboot.
Was “Who’s the Boss?” the first TV show to significantly reverse traditional gender roles? In this series, Tony took on domestic responsibilities while Judith was a successful businesswoman, divorced mother, and independent character – roles not commonly portrayed during that time… With a tomboy daughter to boot.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I’m currently sharing the screen with Billy Crystal in the chilling thriller “Before,” set to debut on Apple TV+ on October 25th. When MovieWeb asked me about potential musings from Milano and my interest in a reboot, I found myself at a loss for words. Here’s why: I don’t have enough information about where they are in the process of planning it, so let’s revisit this topic once things are more concrete. However, I must say that I cherish the time I spent and my bond with Tony Danza deeply.
Indeed, Alyssa’s statement about the show being ahead of its time resonates with me. To this day, I still encounter young women who share with me their memories of watching the show during their childhood. They tell me how it inspired them to pursue careers in business because they saw a strong female character as a role model. At the time, we didn’t fully realize the impact of the gender-swapped roles and the portrayal of a woman in the workplace. ABC deserves recognition for pioneering this concept. It was truly an enlightening era.
Alyssa Milano Has a Plan for the Who’s the Boss Reboot
Back in 2022, Milano shared with Entertainment Tonight that a script for her project was completed and submitted to Freevee, Prime Video’s free streaming platform. However, as we stand in 2024, there seems to be no progress made on the project, but Milano continues to talk about it. In her recent discussions, she stated:
“I think it could be really funny because, in my head, Tony is gonna be the exact same character but everything around him is just changing and growing. So I’m excited about the prospect. I think it could be really, really fun… We’re working really hard, ’cause we feel like we have some more of a story to tell.”
In 2022, Milano jokingly mentioned that Tony would likely be taking care of her children since she will frequently travel for work. She also expressed excitement about the different approach to child-rearing between today and the past, a topic that often sparks disagreements with her parents in real life regarding gentle parenting.
