Despite Being One Of 2024’s Best Releases, Prince Of Persia: The Lost Crown Won’t Get A Sequel

Despite Being One Of 2024’s Best Releases, Prince Of Persia: The Lost Crown Won’t Get A Sequel

As a passionate gamer with years of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment upon hearing the news about Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. This game was a breath of fresh air in the Metroidvania genre, offering a unique blend of combat, visuals, and magic that truly made it stand out.

Story Highlights

  • Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is a high-class side-scrolling Metroidvania that came out earlier this year.
  • The game, according to the developer, will not be getting a sequel due to low sales.
  • The team that worked on the title has been disbanded at Ubisoft Montpellier.

It’s unfortunate news for many fans as the development team responsible for creating the side-scrolling Metroidvania in Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, which was well-received upon its release earlier this year, has reportedly been disbanded according to French industry insider Gautoz. This means any hopes of a sequel have been dashed.

Despite Being One Of 2024’s Best Releases, Prince Of Persia: The Lost Crown Won’t Get A Sequel

It’s been revealed that the move to disband a subteam at Ubisoft Montpellier occurred shortly following the release of The Lost Crown, as this was when sales forecasts began to emerge and the outlook became clear, according to several Ubisoft developers who shared insights about the project’s future.

Initially, some key developers advocated for a sequel’s approval, but this was unsuccessful. Later, they attempted to secure two expansions instead, hoping for success, yet these efforts fell short. Unfortunately, Ubisoft had additional projects requiring more personnel that showed greater sales potential, and the Lost Crown failed to meet its sales targets.

A different explanation the development team heard from management was that launching a sequel for the game might eat into the long-term sales of the original one.

One particular factor that could’ve influenced this is the general consensus around Ubisoft games and how they are prone to going on sale. The game was released in January, and was cut $20 down on its price within the same month for the Xbox Series X|S. This led many to wait for further sales instead of purchasing it at full price.

Prince Of Persia: The Lost Crown Is A Terrific Side-Scroller

I must say, The Lost Crown truly seems to be advancing the genre, opening up opportunities for game developers to take bold steps in the gaming world. Its innovative combat system, coupled with stunning graphics, impressive art design, and numerous magical encounters can easily win over fans, not just supporters of the series. eXputer also gave it a review, scoring it 3.5 out of 5.0, with Usama Mehmood commenting particularly on the title.

2024 began with an unexpectedly fantastic game as Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown surpassed my original assumptions.

It’s a real shame to witness the possible demise of this title’s promising future, given the talent shown so far. Here’s hoping that Ubisoft reconsiders their decision in the future.
