After Dame Maggie Smith's Death, Ralph Fiennes Was Asked About Filming Harry Potter With Her And Shared One Great Tidbit

As a die-hard fan who has grown up with Harry Potter and its magical world, the news of Dame Maggie Smith’s passing left me heartbroken. Her enchanting performances as Professor Minerva McGonagall have been an integral part of my childhood, and her unique charm and wit continue to captivate me even now.

I was among the many who felt a profound sadness upon hearing the news of Dame Maggie Smith’s passing a few weeks back. Since then, I, along with her friends, family, and former colleagues, have been expressing our condolences and fondly reminiscing about this iconic British figure. While she has graced us with numerous memorable roles, it’s her portrayal of Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films that is perhaps most familiar to many of us. Interestingly, even Voldemort himself recently shared a fascinating anecdote about his encounter with the actress from The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.

Ralph Fiennes spent six years as the sinister antagonist in the Wizarding World, quite opposite to Smith’s revered head of Gryffindor House. Though they played adversaries, they were very friendly on set. The Conclave actor was recently asked by Entertainment Tonight what it was like filming Harry Potter with the Gosford Park actress, and he revealed it to be quite comforting, saying:

I rarely collaborated with Maggie, but our work on Harry Potter is an exception. Her humor was exceptional yet somewhat dangerous. During our intense, confrontational scenes, she would give me a sly, ironic glance that seemed to question the absurdity of the situation, as if saying ‘What on earth are we doing here?’ I’ve long been a fan of hers. She’s an extraordinary actress, one of the greats. Her wit was remarkable. She was truly unique.

Though both Ralph Fiennes and Maggie Smith are well-known British actors, they only collaborated on the Wizarding World franchise. However, it’s evident that she left a significant impression on him. In this brief story, her charisma and wit are evidently apparent. I can almost imagine Professor McGonagall giving an ironic side-eye, but surprisingly, that’s just Maggie. It turns out that the actress from “Sister Act” had a unique ability to infuse her own character into her fictional roles.

In the heartfelt tributes paid after Smith’s passing, it was evident that her former colleagues, particularly those from ‘Harry Potter’, highlighted her unique brand of “lethal humor”. This was especially notable among the younger actors who were significantly impacted by her during their early years in the industry. To them, Smith was more than just a co-star; she was almost like a nurturing figure, easing their anxieties and offering gentle guidance in such a challenging profession. Scrolling through their Instagram tributes, it’s clear that they felt deeply connected to her, with Daniel Radcliffe expressing a particularly close bond as he had worked with her on his initial set. Smith played a pivotal role in selecting Radcliffe for the character of Harry Potter, so we owe much of our cherished Harry Potter series to her. It’s hard to imagine the enchanting films without both of them.

Of course, I can’t picture anyone else playing the sinister villain Voldemort either, and to think Ralph Fiennes almost turned it down. Fiennes’ catalog of movies is pretty impressive, but I’d argue a main role in the Harry Potter films will be any actor’s legacy. I’m sure now the Skyfall actor’s quite glad for the films given it allowed him to work alongside the Downton Abbey legend, given he wished he could have experienced more of her talent. He continued:

As a gamer, I can’t help but reflect on the career of an incredible actress who graced our screens for decades. If only I could have witnessed her talent live on stage when I was younger. It’s truly a tremendous loss, isn’t it? There’s no denying it – a great loss indeed.

Truly, Maggie Smith’s departure is deeply felt. Her vivacity and charm enlivened our screens, right up until her impressive performance in “The Miracle Club” in 2023 at the venerable age of 88. She never faltered in her passion for acting, even amidst life’s challenges. Remarkably, she filmed some of the “Harry Potter” movies while battling chemotherapy. If given a role in the latest “Harry Potter” series at 89, I imagine she would have embraced it, perhaps just a cameo appearance.

In summary, the actor chosen to portray McGonagall in Max’s adaptation of the cherished series has a significant task ahead, given the legacy left by the original actress. Rest assured, Max is committed to doing justice to this character, as evident in their early efforts. I recently revisited Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and was moved to tears upon seeing an In Memoriam tribute before the opening credits. You too can pay your respects and watch Maggie’s finest performances across the Wizarding World series by subscribing to Max.
