As a lifelong Marvel fan who’s seen more than my fair share of comic book deaths and resurrections, it seems to me that the death of Venom in “The Last Dance” is as elusive as a certain mutant with invisibility powers.
This piece offers significant revelations about “Venom: The Last Dance,” a film whose title hints at a potential death for Venom. If you haven’t had a chance to watch it yet, please revisit this article once you have.
Over three films, Venom and Eddie Brock (played by Tom Hardy) have formed an unlikely pair, more like a chaotic duo than heaven-sent. They’ve stepped up to save the day numerous times, acting as guardians for the powerless and defenseless, self-proclaimed as lethal protectors. As with all movie series, it’s natural to ponder about the destiny of the main character in the third film, titled “The Last Dance.” This title might leave fans speculating about Venom’s future.
In a new challenge unlike any other, Eddie and Venom encounter their most formidable adversary yet – an apparently invincible xenophage dispatched by Knull (Andy Serkis). This menacing creature locates them on Earth. Although they receive aid from other symbiotes in the climax, additional xenophages appear. In desperation, Venom detaches from Eddie and guides himself and the nearby xenophages towards acid, causing it to dissolve all of them.
The ending is emotional, featuring a recap of all the fun moments shared by Venom and Eddie. As it’s common in comic book movies to resurrect characters in unusual ways, we wonder if Venom actually died or if he might come back to life again. By examining clues from the movie and the comics, let’s try to predict what will happen to Venom in the end. Given how lucrative this character is, it’s safe to say that he won’t stay dead for long.
Can symbiotes actually die in the Marvel universe – or are they unkillable?
Symbiotes are not typically prone to death, but theoretically, they can perish. They are vulnerable to intense heat like fire and high-decibel sounds. So, it might seem possible that a large amount of fire could extinguish a symbiote or continuous exposure to loud noises could separate it from its host, making it vulnerable for potential destruction in its less solid state.
It goes without saying that symbiotes are still very difficult to kill. One of Venom’s powers is a healing factor, and that extends to all symbiotes where they can heal both themselves and their hosts from any wounds or illnesses. However, this does appear to have its limits, as numerous symbiotes have died over the years, particularly within the “Venom” film franchise.
In the final scene of the first “Venom” film, Riot (Riz Ahmed) is destroyed when a rocket fuel tank explodes, exploiting symbiotes’ vulnerability to fire as excessive heat can overpower them. Moreover, in “Venom: Let There Be Carnage”, Venom defeats Carnage (Woody Harrelson) by utilizing Shriek’s (Naomie Harris) deafening screams to detach the symbiote from Cletus Kassady, and then consuming Carnage. Similarly, in “Venom: The Last Dance”, multiple symbiotes meet their demise when they are devoured by xenophages – extraterrestrial beings engineered to eliminate symbiotes. Despite symbiotes’ tough biology, they can still be killed.
Has Venom ever died before?
It’s understandable that Marvel is reluctant to permanently eliminate Venom due to his immense fan following, but it has happened on occasion, as demonstrated in “Venom: The End” #1 by Adam Warren, Jeffrey Cruz, Clayton Cowles, and Jochen Weltjens. In this one-shot story, Venom dies, but he doesn’t stay dead in the primary narrative. Instead, his symbiote forms a new universe inhabited by various creatures it bonds with. This new reality emerges as the old one is destroyed by the Godminds. Interestingly, Venom sacrifices himself heroically in this story, which stands in stark contrast to some of the atrocious acts he has committed previously.
1) This death scene is incredibly innovative and showcases the immense power of the symbiote. Intriguingly, Venom holds his own against Superman in a Marvel/DC crossover comic – a fact that’s not commonly known. It’s not just brute strength that makes Venom formidable; even when he’s not attached to a host, he essentially transforms into a blob of goo, and this goo could potentially keep fragments of Venom alive if the main body is destroyed.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed that in Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man 3,” Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man manages to vanquish Topher Grace’s Venom by hurling an explosive into the ooze mass. The blast burns and obliterates much of Venom, but there are hints that he might not be completely gone. In Dr. Connors’ (Dylan Baker) lab, fragments of the symbiote are examined, suggesting that a part of Venom could still linger. Interestingly enough, this is echoed in Marvel’s “Spider-Man 2” game, where it seems like Venom meets his end; however, traces of him could potentially remain. This detail is vital for comprehending how Venom might reemerge in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.
Does Venom die in The Last Dance? It’s complicated
Initially, it might seem clear whether Venom perishes in ‘The Last Dance.’ He deliberately gives up his life to eliminate the xenophages and thereby destroy the codex as desired by Knull. However, it’s important to note that not all of Venom was present during the climactic fight.
In the opening scene of “Venom: The Last Dance,” Strickland (Chiwetel Ejiofor) seizes a small fragment of Venom’s symbiote remnant left at the Mexico bar. Simultaneously, he apprehends the bartender (Cristo Fernández). In the post-credits sequence for “Venom: The Last Dance,” we witness the bartender fleeing from Area 51. A broken vial is also shown, and it’s reasonable to assume that this was the container Strickland used to gather the symbiote at the beginning of the movie. This tiny piece of Venom could potentially revive him, growing in size until it can bond with Eddie in New York, even though most of Venom has perished.
It’s plausible that the container may have contained something different altogether. However, the return of the bartender during the post-credits scene seems to imply that we should recall the scene where Strickland obtained the symbiote. It’s possible that Venom has perished, allowing Sony’s Spider-Man Universe to progress without him and enabling Eddie to lead a more straightforward life. If Tom Hardy decides to leave the franchise, Venom might bond with another character, as there have been numerous potential hosts in the comics. Perhaps this fragment of symbiote could encounter Flash Thompson in the Sony-Verse to keep the character relevant. Given that Knull continues to pose a threat, it seems logical for Venom to remain active.
