The Epic Prank Cole Sprouse And David Schwimmer Played On Jennifer Aniston While Filming Friends

As someone who has spent countless hours binge-watching Friends over the years, I can confidently say that the show is a timeless classic that never fails to entertain and bring a smile to my face. The antics of Ross, Rachel, Monica, Chandler, Joey, and Phoebe are ingrained in my memory, and their hilarious pranks continue to be a source of joy for me even today.

It doesn’t matter how many years pass or how many great shows hit the 2024 TV schedule, Friends remains one of the most beloved sitcoms of all time. The NBC series celebrated its 30th anniversary this year, and it’s been fun to go down memory lane to recall stories like that Thanksgiving trifle being even grosser than we realized and how terrible it was for the stars to film that opening fountain scene. However, there are few things that could rival the epic prank that David Schwimmer and Cole Sprouse played on Jennifer Aniston in one Season 7 episode.

As one of the most rewatchable shows ever (available to stream with a Max subscription), Friends seems to have a never-ending number of behind-the-scenes lore for new generations of fans to uncover. One scene from “The One With the Truth About London” is making the rounds on Instagram, so check it out:

In the given episode, Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), unknowingly, forms a connection with Ross’ son Ben (Cole Sprouse, at a younger age). This bond is established when she shares with him some of the tricks she and her sisters used to play on each other in the past. Since Rachel doesn’t have any siblings in the series at that time, Ben uses these newly learned tricks against his parents – Carol, Susan, and Ross (David Schwimmer) – which results in both Ben and Rachel finding themselves in a bit of trouble.

In this particular scene, it appears Ben is playing a final trick on his father, resulting in Ross becoming enraged and pursuing the boy through the hallway and up the stairs. Interestingly, David Schwimmer was the one who directed “The One With the Truth About London,” and it’s said that Jennifer Aniston wasn’t aware a full-sized dummy of Ross had been made for the event. When the figure tumbled down the stairs, her scream was genuine, and there’s a tale that Aniston momentarily broke character and exclaimed, “Oh my God, David!”, which needed to be cut from the final edit.

Observing how she whirled in distress upon seeing the dummy, along with the stern glance she shot at David Schwimmer once she understood the situation, strongly suggests that she was unaware of the events unfolding.

It seems that Jennifer Aniston’s spontaneous, hilarious reaction during “The One With the Cuffs” in Season 4 wasn’t the only one to be included in the final edit. The scene where Matthew Perry hits his head with a filing cabinet drawer while handcuffed and pantsless wasn’t scripted initially, but both their unscripted reactions truly make this scene even funnier.

The 30th anniversary celebration for this notable series hasn’t been entirely joyous. Sadly, we’ve missed Matthew Perry, who tragically passed away at the age of 54 last year, preventing his attendance. Furthermore, not all reminiscences from our time on set have been pleasant. Elliott Gould shared an anecdote about a producer becoming enraged when he accidentally revealed a major season finale plot twist prematurely. Tate Donovan has also shared insights into the challenging times he and Jennifer Aniston experienced in their real-life relationship, which coincided with his character playing Rachel’s love interest Joshua.

To re-experience some of the funniest Friends episodes that sparked these fascinating behind-the-scenes tales, you’ll find all 10 seasons on Max, a top-notch streaming platform worth subscribing to.
